I am currently studying art history and am unable to find much information on the philosophy of surrealism, as well as the philosophy of the pop art movement. i would really appreciate your help!
Surrealism was influenced by Freudian psychoanalysis and through that developed ‘automatism’. It’s painting what is in your subconscious, without any restriction http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surrealist_automatism
Pop Art: It’s philosophy is turning the common thing into art as a response to the increasing visuality in modern times (in tabloids, ads etc.) It’s not always quite clear if it is an appreciation of an increasing wealth after WWII or if it is a satirical, critical view to its development (thesis is, that is has changed: 50ies: positive response to increasing wealth, 60ies critique on political developments and the way society dealt with them (or did not deal with them)
Surrealism:
- Imagination is more useful than rationality (rationality leads to violence, as evidenced by war)
- Dreams have a deep impact on waking life
- Accessing our inner psyches can help us solve life’s problems
Pop Art:
- Reaction against Abstract Expressionism
- Mass culture was the main inspiration for Pop Art
- Irony and parody were often used to highlight the often ridiculous nature of mass culture
