To the casual movie viewer, the history of cinema begins in the 1930s, when silents were totally replaced with the novel talkie medium. Beyond an occasional showing of The Phantom of the Opera or a few Keaton or Chaplin movies, silents- and especially early silents- are a allotment of the sunless past. This collection offers a big variety. From early melodramas and comedies to newsreel footage and special effects vehicles. The represent quality is excellant especially considering the age of these films.

The music by Robert Israel is fantastic, always appropriate and quite a bit less sober than most still movie music. Even my mother, who likes silents but dislikes still movie music enjoyed it. It should please both purists and casual fans.

One fault I found with this collection is that some movies have narration whether you want it or not. It surely would not have been difficult to include an on/off function for the commentary track. Also, at points the sound is badly mixed so that the music drowns out the narrator. However, this fairly minor flaw did not waste my enjoyment of the collection.

I particularly enjoyed the pre-WWI French films, it is easy to examine why the French imports could outshine remarkable of the American output. They are beautifully produced, develop no bones about their staginess and have an element of sportive fantasy. The last disc has a film of the improbable French comedian Max Linder, it’s a shame that he never regained his pre-war popularity because his comedy is spurisingly original and he has certain charisma.

The newsreels are also a highlight, Russia in the winter, various “working dogs”, an english biscuit factory… all are considerable historically as well as very comical.

This region is cheap at the mark and while not all of the films can be called masterpieces, they are all vital in reconstructing a period of cinema history that is too often ignored. If you have any interest in the tale of earlky cinema, I recommend this area without reservation.

This area contains over 100 films from the early days of the quiet cinema – beginning with some of the early serial photography experiments by Edward Muybridge.

We recognize the works of the Edison Studio, the early Lumiere Brothers films, and a grand selection of Melies films.

Most wonderful to me were the tinted films from the Pathe Freres company. There are two films that are absolutely fabulous, as every frame of the film was tinted by hand. The colors are vibrant and surprisingly consistent. Friends who have watched these films have arrive away simply vexed.

The films presented here are not all bright. There are quite a few films from the infancy of cinema, when the camera was conventional to perform scenes that are really the equivalent of postcards, where a serene camera would have produced the same conclude. Many films are incomplete, a dim fact of cinema preservation, and often frustrating when you don’t gather to recognize the second half of the film! There are no Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, or Fatty Arbuckle films to be seen here, and only one D.W. Griffith film. (Griffith will be well represented in a future release effect together by David Shepherd’s “Film Preservation Associates” on Image DVD.)

What is here are the just beginnings of an art beget, the experiments that made film what it is now. There are also kindly program notes by Charles Musser, which really relieve account for what is being seen, especially when parts of a film are missing. Kudos to the Kino company for including these notes!

If you are a cinema nut, and enthusiastic in the origins of film, then this residence is highly recommended!

My sister has raved about this film for as long as I can remember. When I failed to secure it in our local video store, she told me not to anxiety, as she had recently bought it and would lend it to me. Well, having now seen the film, I can understand why she raved about it. It is a vastly animated film, filled with a smattering of history, swashbuckling action, political intrigue, romance, and laughable humor. Couple all this with some very safe acting and direction, and one has a must-see period fragment. It is historical fiction brought to life.

Based loosely upon the novels of Baroness Orczy, the Scarlet Pimpernel is the hero of beleaguered eighteenth century French aristocrats. The Scarlet Pimpernel dedicates himself to rescuing aristocrats that, in the Republic of the post-revolution era, are destined to lose their heads in the feeding frenzy engendered by the minions of Robespierre. Objective who the Scarlet Pimpernel is, the French have not a clue, other than he is believed to be an Englishman. The viewer, however, is on the secret of his identity from the very beginning.

Anthony Andrews plays the extremely foppish dandy, Sir Percy Blakeney, who is about as blue blooded as one can be and live. He is also the wealthiest man in all of England. Given to laughable his fellow aristocrats with bons mots, he also devises inviting rhyming couplets about the Scarlet Pimpernel. Speaking in a highly affected snarl and sporting the latest in fashionable attire, Sir Percy is a seemingly unlikely action hero. Yet, it is he who rescues those who are destined to lose their heads to the dreaded guillotine. It is he who is the Scarlet Pimpernel.

Since the Scarlet Pimpernel is putting a crimp into the post-revolution blood bath, the feared Chauvelin (Ian McKellen), an ardent revolutionist and hatchet man for Robespierre, seeks to win him. Chauvelin has a soft side, however, as he is profoundly in savor with Marguerite St. Honest (Jane Seymour), the premier actress of France and one of its most eminent beauties. Unfortunately for him, however, Sir Percy has fair met Marguerite and been smitten. When Sir Percy romantically woos and wins the heart of Marguerite, she consents to marry him, not bright that he is the Scarlet Pimpernel. When she marries Sir Percy, Chauvelin stops at nothing to precise his revenge, and his actions eventually cause a rift in the marriage.

What happens to Sir Percy, Marguerite, and Chauvelin is well worth seeing. Anthony Andrews is utterly charming, romantic, and drolly laughable in his dual role as the dandified fop/dashing action hero who is in care for with the prettiest girl in town. Jane Seymour is perfect as the blooming thespian who captures the heart of a wealthy aristocrat, only to catch, in the destroy, that she has married a romantic hero. Ian McKellen is effective as the angst ridden Chauvelin, who has had his heart pierced by Cupid’s arrow.

This is a astounding film. Now, having seen it on video, I am eagerly awaiting its release on DVD, so as to add it to my personal collection. It is a film that one can indulge in watching again and again.

The Scarlet Pimpernel is an English top-notch who rescues French aristocrats from the murderous reign of dread Robespierre unleashed in France. In “steady life” he is a dandified, seemingly idiotic and obsessively fastidious “wimp”; whom everyone regards as wholly incompetent (though incredibly rich) ; but actually he is a heroic, dashing adventurer, incredibly incandescent man who might have been the fictional ancestral understanding of Clark Kent and Superman.

Anthony Andrews is utterly elegant in this film. His performance as Percy (The Scarlet Pimpernel) is flawless, and eclipses even the astonishing beauty and acting of Jane Seymour, who is also safe in every manner. Ian McKellan is a astronomical villain. The music is very good; the cinematography handsome, and the sage is non-stop action, romance, and adventure, as we eye how this fabulous character saves aristocrats and falls in love; as the place moves towards his attempt to keep the heir to the throne of France. He is so toothsome to glimpse as the foppish Percy that the film contains humor as well as suspense, intrigue, and worry.

For some reason I’ve never read this novel; but I will surely do so; and frankly, from a pure enjoyment point of belief, this is one of the best 25 or so films I’ve ever seen. I can’t recommend it highly enough; and hope to salvage it on DVD someday. It’s not only a film worth seeing; it’s a film worth owning. Sink me; if that’s not the truth.

“San Francisco”, MGM’s ‘Showcase’ film of 1936, demonstrates why no other studio could ‘touch’ Metro at it’s prime. Acquire the biggest star in Hollywood, team him with the ‘Queen’ of 1930s MGM musicals, add the greatest film actor of a generation in aid, then top things off with a ‘no-expense-spared’ recreation of the most noted earthquake in American history, and an instant Classic was born!

Seventy years later, the film has lost runt of it’s luster; certainly the ‘Message’ is a bit heavy-handed, the long opera sequences may produce some viewers cringe, and some of the effects (appealing double exposures) seem quaint in an era of CGI…but Clark Gable unruffled projects his signature cockiness and virility, Jeanette MacDonald is calm glorious (and can determined belt out “San Francisco”), and Spencer Tracy is aloof lovely (it is easy to gawk why he received a ‘Best Actor’ nomination, in what was obviously a supporting role; he easily steals the film, in every scene he’s in) .

Directed by the much W.S. (‘Woody’) Van Dyke, a consummate craftsman, and one of MGM’s fastest directors (contradictory terms, but he combined urge and style, effortlessly), with a screenplay, surprisingly, by future “Gentlemen Buy Blondes” author, Anita Loos (from a fable by Robert Hopkins), “San Francisco” exudes confidence, from the riotously decadent Unique Year’s Eve, 1905, opening scene, to the finale, as Gable, MacDonald, Tracy, and, apparently, most of the survivors of the earthquake and fire march to a hilltop, vowing to manufacture a ‘better’ city, and singing “The Battle Hymn of the Republic”, as they notion the smoking ruins, which dissolves into the ‘modern’ San Francisco of 1936.

Corny? Certainly! But undeniably rousing, as well!

The ‘Special Features’ are top-notch, as well; the TNT documentary, “Titanic, Shadowy, and Handsome: Clark Gable”, while glossing over some ‘seamier’ chapters of Gable’s life, does offer insights by the daughter he secretly fathered by Loretta Young, and the son he died before ever seeing…and the biography is VASTLY noble to the one offered in the “Gone with the Wind” Special Edition. An ‘alternate ending’ is barely different from the true one, other than offering more views of the city, but the 1936 MGM cartoon (“Bottles”) is astonishingly well-crafted and magnificent in Technicolor, and two Technicolor ‘TravelTalk’ short features, from 1940, on San Francisco, and Appreciate Island, at the time of the 1939-40 World Exposition, are both very exciting and a visual ‘time machine’ support to a simpler era.

This is a amazing DVD, certainly worth owning!

From the mid 20s till the mid 50s, METRO-GOLDWYN MAYER(MGM) boasted they had more stars than there are in the heaven. MGM was the first studio to release a film with more than two stars(it was in 1932 – the Academy Award winning Stout HOTEL starring Garbo, Beery, Crawford and Lionel Barrymore) . SAN FRANCISCO proved to be one of the finest that ever came out of Hollywood. 3 Stars; Clark Gable, Jeanette MacDonald and Spencer Tracy; strong narrative containing drama, music, song, romance A N D disaster; space decorations by Cedric Gibbons, special effects that has never dated, realistic scenes from ol`Frisco, though everything was shot in the MGM studios at Culver City. SAN FRANCISCO is a film that will never lose its appeal because of all these ingredients. This film is a MUST-SEE. One of the best that was ever made.

Here we observe Paul Ganaire considering modern recipes, and designing foods from a tedious basement. Pleasing specialized, but where else do we witness the cooking creative process on understanding? The series of documentaries also include one on Michel Guerard (Inventing Cuisine: Michel Guerard) . Not for everyone, but an enthralling itsy-bitsy bit of film.

We pick up to perceive how the eminent chef creates unique recipes. It’s done in what looks like a slight basement. It is a great attempt to point to how one person creates. I would say the focus is more on the creative process than on cooking. I would only recommend this DVD to people that are involved in the creative process or that have a special interest in this chef.

A friend gave my kids this movie–I didn’t bewitch it because the concept of a live-action GEORGE OF THE JUNGLE seemed funny to me. Fortunately for my family, this movie is amusing in a worthy plan, gleefully comical, with lots of physical comedy, puns, in-jokes, and high ridiculousness. This movie has good-natured fun. The casting of Fraser and Mann as George and Ursula is inspired, and Cleese as the snort of Ape works wonders. Movies that elicit ecstatic instead of derisive laughter deserve our attention, so unless you’re sensitive about the requisite animal excrement jokes (the easiest map to avoid a “G” rating), examine this movie with your kids. Then seek it with your buddies. It might even be a first-rate date movie.

The DVD package, however, offers another example of Disney’s charging premium prices for few extras. Unfortunately, the disc is also pan-and-scan instead of widescreen. If you already acquire the videotape, you might as well wait and hope that Disney upgrades the DVD package.

This film was made in the expansive tradition of Walt Disney’s live action films aimed at the adolescent audience that his studio produced in the 60s and continued into the 70s. It works beautifully tweaking the formula for the 90′s audiences. Brendan Fraser is perfect as George in his enjoy likeable but not very colorful diagram. You really feel for this guy because he wants to do what is fair and derive the job done. The special effects are favorable because they not only witness satisfactory but they add to the finish of the storytelling and invent an innovative world for the audience to immerse themselves into. The casting is also sterling. Thomas Hayden Church as an equally not-very-bright cad is perfect. You almost feel sorry for this guy. John Cleese doing the utter of Ape is a riot. He has several amusing scenes, especially come the very destroy. This is film is genuine no matter what age you are. I highly recommend this one.

I have to say that I’m a stout fan of this film, and I already believe the DVD. Most of those wanting to assume this film on Bluray are those who have already seen it and liked it, so I won’t comment on the movie deny itself, but rather the technical and supplemental aspects of this release.

I borrowed a friend’s copy of the BD version of ID4 fair a few weeks ago, as I was contemplating whether to add this to my dinky but growing blu-ray collection. The represent and audio are genuine, and watching this on my current LCD at 1080p with the lossless DTS-MA audio track really transported me abet to the July of ’96, when I watched this on the astronomical conceal. This movie has certainly used well these thirteen years, and the special effects are aloof terrific even today. While watching, I was ravishing grand space on adding this to my collection.

That is, until after I finished watching the movie and wanted to gawk the extras in HD.

The DVD version I have contains two discs and a lot of extras, including an alternate ending, making-of feature, trailers, and cast/crew interviews. Sadly, in this BD release there are none, not even in standard definition. The only “extra” is a commentary track, which, as an another reviewer already pointed out, is laughably outdated. At $25, I would inquire more than honest a movie and nothing else.

The Gloomy Knight BD had two discs plus a digital copy for the same price- that was justifiable, even in this economy. This… isn’t.

FOX is well-known for double-dipping their DVD and Blu-ray releases. I would imagine that a two-disc or dual-layered “special edition” version will near out over the next year or so.

Needless to say, this BD release is quite a disappointment.

This is one of my most common movies!! It is hard to select which is better the cast, special effects or writing. The special effects go without saying – worthy. The timing on some of the events like the synchronized takedown of the different cities could not have been done better. I can’t say enough nice things about the cast. Will Smith was laughable at times and yet peaceful the tragic hero. Randy Quaid was priceless! Jeff Goldblum was more likeable in this movie than I have ever seen him in the past. I also view Robert Loggia and Bill Pullman were well chosen. While the script was similar to movies done in the past, there was a unusual slump on it. I particularly liked the scene when Bill Pullman gave his speech prior to fighting the enemy. Some borrowed history from a Dylan Thomas’ poem was genius.

“Desperate Housewives” made its debut in 2004 to rave reviews and high Nielsen ratings. Season one of the reveal is considered a fresh classic. Teri Hatcher, Felicity Huffman, Marcia Putrid, Eva Longoria Parker, and Nicolette Sheridan are shapely as usual, but in season four they salvage upended by the newcomer to Wisteria Lane. Two-time Emmy winner Dana Delany (“China Beach”) is an absolute standout as Katherine Mayfair. There’s an lively back-story lively Delany and “Desperate Housewives” when the show’s creator Marc Cherry was casting the important roles relieve in 2004. Cherry originally offered Delany the role of Bree, but turned it down since she claimed it was too similar to a role she had on a short-lived TV series she starred on a few years earlier (that indicate was called “Pasadena”, which aired on FOX) . But Cherry never gave up on her. After he created current character Katherine he wanted Delany for the fragment, and this time she current. This was an challenging storyline throughout season four, and it ends perfectly in the final episode. And what makes it even better, Delany’s Katherine will be benefit next season.

My only complaint about “Desperate Housewives: The Complete Fourth Season” is that the season was shorter than usual. You can blame that on all the writers from the exiguous conceal to the gargantuan veil for going on strike for three months, which ended shutting down the production on not only “Desperate Housewives”, but all shows on television. And that was kind of a bummer, because a few more storylines had to be prick short. For example, there was a very laughable storyline entertaining a ecstatic male couple that moved to Wisteria Lane, and I consider the writers originally had planned to expand this storyline throughout the season. But after the writer’s strike ended and there was only room for seven episodes, the writers couldn’t expand this storyline has they had planned. Whether or not this storyline will be expanded for season five remains to be seen.

And when season five debuts in the topple of 2008, it’ll be sharp to discover what will be going on. In the final moments of the last episode of season four, the action flash forwards to five years later, which I presume is where the expose will seize up when season five starts. And it’ll be intelligent to witness what’s going on, because “Desperate Housewives” leaves us dangling with another bizarre cliffhanger: who’s the man (and it’s not Mike) that’s kissing Susan in the final scene?

In season 4 of DH we observe the present going support to the basics, to the thing that made fans appreciate DH: the friendships. The friendships of Lynette, Susan, Bree and Gabrielle, as well as each individual character, were tested over and over again and they endured. It was this quality of enduring friendship amongst women that makes this prove so splendid.

Season 3 dealt with each women independently, barely interacting with the other friends and thus we lost that which made the explain worthwhile, their interactions. Lynette relies on her friends and family to go through cancer, Bree deals with faking a pregnancy, Susan must deal with her marriage with Mike and Gabrielle must choose between Carlos and Victor.

We also recognize the introduction of another character, Katherine Mayfair (and of course, her many secrets which deserve to be a character all of their fill) . She was such an safe character that I instantly liked her, secrets and all. Katherine was a veteran resident of Wisteria Lane and a friend of Susan’s. She has a ton of secrets and a procedure to challenge each and everyone of our Wisteria Lane ladies.

Tornadoes, blackmail (tons of blackmail), ex-husbands, drugs, maniacs, and tons of humor. This is one of the best DH seasons to date.

This is a spacious DVD with outstanding quality. I had never seen this movie before buying the DVD but it is very delicious and Clark Gable is fair gargantuan. Lots of Laughs! Highly Recommend!

I’ve been a life-long Godzilla fan, and I’ve been dying to scrutinize this movie for a while. Now that its finally out on DVD, I must say I was entertained by it, but not overly impressed.

The best point is that its composed a Godzilla movie…watching Godzilla rise out of Tokyo bay to unleash senseless destruction impartial never gets faded. The Godzilla suit in this film is slightly modified from the Godzilla 2000/Megaguirus suit, and looks alot better. But the literal ‘shining’ star of this movie is MechaGodzilla. This is the best get yet for MechaGodzilla, out of all the ‘Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla’ movies (4 in all, counting this one, and not the sequel which is coming soon) .

As others had pointed out, this movie was similar to Godzilla X Megaguirus…too similar, in fact. It had virtually the same pacing and sage development, and a nearly identical ending. Other flaws included Godzilla’s stationary reactions…he’s getting rocked with missiles and ‘Mazer’ beams, and they honest have a vast dummy standing there, completely motionless. After the outstanding effects from the last movies, you’d deem they could do better than that. And once again, this is an ‘origin retelling’, in that its another ‘alternate universe’ storyline that retells Godzilla’s origins. I don’t contemplate there’s been a Godzilla movie at all within the past 15 years that hasn’t started the origin of Godzilla over from scratch.

Complaints aside, this movie has to be commended on a few things. As already stated, the MechaGodzilla make is probably the best obtain they’ve had yet for it. The battles, though somewhat short, were well done. Godzilla was more depraved than usual in this particular film, being noteworthy more liberal with his atomic breath and wreaking havoc. The one piece that stood out the most in my mind, and is definitely my current share of the film, is when MechaGodzilla goes ‘berserk’. Clearly inspired from Neon Genesis Evangelion, MechaG’s residual DNA memories, being a result of constructing the machine from the corpse of the 1954 Godzilla, collect triggered by this fresh Godzilla’s wrong yell, sending MechaGodzilla into an absolute frenzy. Unfortunately that legend angle was not pursued any further in the movie, and its something that I hope they go into in the sequel.

Overall, Godzilla X MechaG was expedient…but compared to some of the more fresh films, particularly Giant Monsters All-Out Attack(one of my all-time favorites), GXMG unprejudiced didn’t stand out too grand. I hope the sequel picks it up at a better toddle, since I smooth enjoyed this film immensely. Nevertheless, if you’re a G fan, catch this film. You won’t regret it…its definitely worth the choose.

Scene for scene, this movie is almost a carbon copy of it’s predecessor, Godzilla vs. Megaguirus. It is certain that the same writers and director were at work here again, but with a distinguished better finished product. One of the major differences that sets this one apart are the special effects. Now, I have been a Godzilla fan for many years and I have nothing but like for the cheesy effects from past films. However, the effects in this installment are very impressive. I cannot retract at any point in the movie, saying to myself, “Ha, unbiased like the veteran days”. No sir, the effects were friendly, rivaling most Hollywood productions of today.

Also, the pacing of the film was very tight and moved at a very genuine accelerate. This film is about 20 minutes shorter than the prior film. I’m not clear if a novel editor was at work or not, but whomever was in charge gets kudos from me.

Also, the music in the film is almost the same as Godzilla vs. Megaguirus but with enough subtle changes to support it current. Michiru Ohshima has brought a modern level of suspense and excitement to the franchise and I hope she stays on board for many more installments. My only negative regarding the gather is that it would be nice to hear more of Akira Ifukube’s fresh theme. Besides that, well done.

Now, being American, I can’t accurately comment on the acting but I conception each performance was believable. Yumiko Shaku was a superb leading lady and is very easy on the eyes. There are also cameos featuring other Godzilla alumni including Misato Tanaka, the heroine from the previous film, here as a hospital nurse. Being able to perceive these two glorious women is worth the impress of admission for me alone.

The franchise seems to be in very superb hands. Having said that, I wouldn’t mind seeing a more escapist arrive in upcoming installments with aliens, status monsters, and maybe a cheesy achieve or two…objective like the venerable days.
