How are abstract paintings defined as being ‘abstract’? Whenever I paint something, people tell me it’s abstract…so I’m just wondering…
"Abstract art is now generally understood to mean art that does not depict objects in the natural world, but instead uses colour and form in a non-representational way."

In spite of the Wiki Def. I would come at it differently:
Virtually All Art is Abstract… It is not the thing itself.
Magritte’s painting "Ceci n’est pas une pipe" addresses this very issue.
Language, Words are also abstractions that we use to convey ideas, experiences….
The issue you ask and that the Wiki Def addresses I would prefer to call "non-representational" or "non-objective" Art. I think those words provide a better description of the issue.
The pioneers of the early 20th century spoke of "abstracting imagery" from their environment. Cubism provides us the initial visual "vocabulary" for much of this "abstracting process".

mercu,
In my education I learned that abstract art can still be seen as representing something recognizable. It has been "abstracted" to some degree, but is made to look like the real world.
Non-objective art is what is often mistakenly called abstract art. It does not try to represent anything in the real world, abstracted or otherwise. It must meet formal parameters of art like composition, color, background and foreground that are taught in early art classes.
Some schools do teach it differently, so it can be confusing to picture what someone is talking about when they toss around general art terms.

basically if the painting is not a copy of the object because u changed the colour , shape or added mark making then its abstract. obvioulsy there r degrees in how abstract a painting is

I don`t like and I don`t believe in abstract art. You have to have some idea on mind starting with lenght or width of the canvas, what color are going to use, what lines to draw, everything that obliges you to think. If you think is not abstract unless your completely drunk or drugged like Jackson Pollock who didn`t know what he was doing, just running like crazy over a canvas on the floor.
I think that you could do abstract art, abstracting yourself of any sensorial feeling. For example, take a program on your computer like Corel Draw or similar. Put something over your eyes and move your mouse all over the screen taking the tools available. In a few minutes you will have an abstraction.
The rest is just interpretation. Anyone can think anything of the meaning of the picture, all will be wrong. It`s just a chaotic and mad way of dirtying a canvas.

abstract art is when you draw something that isn’t usually visible to the naked eye or something that isn’t seen in everyday life.
Example: picasso was the first artist to draw a person with their body parts located in different places than where they usually were located before.
