“Clannad” is another anime series by Key Visual Arts, based on a dating simulation game produced in Japan in both an adult and non-adult version, like Kanon. Do not let the series hentai heritage bother you, however, for this series is completely PG all the contrivance. This station comes with two disks, containing the first twelve episodes of the reveal. The production values are exquisite. The animation is top drawer, the music is both fitting and glorious. Because of the similarity in art and record, this series will no doubt be compared to Kanon, and, in the beginning, it appears to follow the same formula. Peevish, bishonin hero with emotional problems, check. Harem of splendid young girls who inexplicably dote on said hero, check. And there are the stereotypical harem members: The ditzy loner girl with self-image problems, check. The mysterious loli-bait girl with the tragic illness, check. The tough girl with a heart of gold, check. There is also the obligatory genius girl with no social graces and the (shades of Lucky Star) the blue-haired twins sisters, one with a pushy, irritating personality, the other a afraid, cute, aloof girl. There is the hero’s obligatory best friend, the standard goof-ball type who comes equipped with the pervert option and the queer colored hair option. And though it may not be lovely to compare Clannad to Kanon, I found the tale in Clannad not as easy to come by into. I did not become as easily attached to the characters and their stories did not “grab” me at first. The first twelve episodes notify the narrative of Tomoya, our hero, who is a delinquent, and the girls at his school. His life begins to change for the better when he meets the ditzy girl, Nagisa, who was held encourage a year in high school due to ill health and is uncomfortable because all her friends and classmates have graduated, leaving her gradual. The two become a tonic for each other, and in helping Nagisa, Tomoya begins to glean his have redemption. Their narrative is derailed share procedure through with the intrusion of the tragic Fuka storyline. I found that, about half arrangement through the Fuka fable arc I had become attached to the characters at last, and began enjoying the record mighty more. THE BRAVADOS is a touchy, brutal fraction of work that in many ways predates the cynical moods of later Westerns of the 60s and 70s. Gregory Peck stars a man hooked on revenge against the four men who raped and murdered his wife. The outlaws (Stephen Boyd, Albert Salmi, Henry Silva and Lee Van Cleef) are in jail in Rio Arriba waiting to be hung, and Peck is there to eye the deed. The prisoners dash, however, and Peck becomes an obssessed member of the posse sent to hunt them down. This is another fruitful collaboration between Peck and director Henry King, who also made THE GUNFIGHTER and TWELVE O’CLOCK HIGH together. This is NOT the Gregory Peck we know and worship! He is testy, sulky, paunchy of exasperate and relentless in his pursuit of the villains. The brutality of the film may reach as a shock to viewers even now, but its harshness makes it a precursor to the Sergio Leone/CLint Eastwood films nearly a decade later. (The fact that Lee Van Cleef has a major supporting role makes the connection even stronger.) There is also a mean but logical twist in the yarn that makes THE BRAVADOS one of the most tantalizing of 1950s Westerns.

There’s going to be a hanging in Rio Arriba, and Jim Douglass (Gregory Peck) has ridden a hundred miles to contemplate it. You watch, the four men – Stephen Boyd, Albert Salmi, Henry Silva and Lee van Cleef – about to be hanged committed a substantial crime that changed Douglass’s life forever, and he’s there to leer justice carried out. I admire revenge movies, and the premise of Henry King’s THE BRAVADOS holds vast promise. One avenging angel – Gregory Peck – versus four scurvy killers. The best revenge movies go to the crawl as soon as possible, and express character and motivation through the promenade. Unfortunately THE BRAVADOS takes forever to kick into gear. The movie spends a great half hour in Rio Arriba, an eternity in movie time, introducing characters and establishing motives. Some of the characters don’t really belong in the movie, either. It’s in Rio Arriba that we meet Josefa Velarde (Joan Collins), a aesthetic young Elizabeth Taylor type who met, loved and declined Douglass’s proposals a half-decade or so ago. Collins wasn’t a terrific actress, and some of her high emotion scenes in this one are painfully amateurish. Even a talented actress wouldn’t redeem the role, though. Every time Josefa appears the movie grinds to a conclude. THE BRAVADOS expose the rule that women and action movies don’t mix.

On the trailer Gregory Peck tells us that THE BRAVADOS is `a large legend with a immense impact.’ I’d call it a potentially tremendous fable that never gets on track. We learn a great surprise or two reach the slay, ones that should have taken our breath away. Instead they kind of limp over the line, somewhat naked in their improbability. Peck proves noble of doing justice to a revenge-ridden protagonist. It would have been intriguing, and probably would have resulted in a noteworthy better movie, if he could have spent more time exploring the gloomy side of his character.

The double sided dvd contains both pudgy conceal and widescreen versions of the movie. I watched the widescreen version, which was in very agreeable condition. Extras include a trailer for the movie and a couple of very brief – under a shrimp per – period newsreels.

This wonderful movie is a gaze at the ways that a man, the protagonist Jay (Heed Rylance) once-married, and a once fairly veteran husband and dad, can utterly topple apart in divorce, the heartbreaking ways he might try to establish a life benefit together, and the ache for connection and communion that can’t necessarily be soothed – within or without “elated” marriages.

By now the residence and the fact of its depiction of acts of sexual intercourse are famous. There is a woman, Claire. She shows up at Jay’s door, Wednesdays at 2 PM. We don’t know anything about her at first – unprejudiced that once she’s in his apartment, her clothes (and his) reach off. The five to ten minutes of intense once-weekly sex on Jay’s apartment floor is no less significant for being hastily and wordless; it is a sort of a pact between the couple, and their shared illness, really. But it can’t, ultimately, do the trick, and the film succeeds – unmoralistically – in showing us how and why. The hasten to gather either oblivion or ecstasy – whether via alcohol or sex or other means – fuels the couple. There are extraordinary surprises along the plot, via a script that is utterly believable and natural.

In fact, every aspect of the protagonist Jay’s life is in fact shown harshly, “graphically,” whether it is his hectic job tending bar, his messy, depressing apartment (further evidence that he has lost his moorings), his several friends, or his frantic travels through London. (The camera chases him, and he is chasing her) . We’re by turns frustrated, confused, and focused. One’s attention never wanders during this sage.

Children (Jay’s and Claire’s) are weak well in this film. They can articulate the truth, and they do. They expend the word “worship” – and the adults in this movie really can’t. In several scenes Jay is at his ex-wife’s apartment, bathing his resplendent limited sons. He lies on what was the marriage bed and makes a sort of sunless and frantic fetish of his ex-wife’s underwear, and is interrupted by his son, who needs his relieve. We are never asked to be voyeurs, but witnesses to a lot of sadness, injure – and the grief, really, of the attainment of happiness.

This is an astounding film about broken hearts – and what people might do to try to mend them.

Intimacy isn’t about titillation or tanned toned Hollywood studs and babes having perfectly choreographed sex in attractive lighting while awful piano music plays. Instead it’s about an ordinary pair of people seeking solace in a purely physical relationship. Both are empty individuals and briefly procure something to fire them in their weekly sexual meetings. Nothing is said but there is a purity of thought.

The relationship, and the film, only falters when the film moves outside the seedy flat that the liaisons purchase set in. The wordless contrivance can only work while everything is strictly anonymous, and once Jay (Rylance) delves into Claire’s (Fox) personal life their apparently simple relationship becomes more complicated.

It’s also here that the film briefly slumps. Jay encounters Claire’s taxi driver husband, played by an uncharacteristically off effect Timothy Spall. Speaking nonsense and totally over the top, his scenes are almost unbearably wearisome. I can certainly peruse why Claire would want peace and calm and intense sex after listening to that intensely stupid man twitter on. Smooth, it doesn’t invent his scenes any better to discover.

Despite that though the film regains it footing and ends strongly. Even Timothy Spall’s character shows some hidden depths! However, Intimacy works best as a comment on the relationships people trap themselves in. It’s easier to discontinue in an heart-broken relationship than slip out, and starting something recent takes courage. Jay and Claire are unable to dash their empty lives, except in their sexual relationship. Really both are cowards. Neither is tickled, but neither makes a serious anxiety to change their circumstances. Sex is a temporary reply to a permanent spot, and until they approach out for something more neither will be tickled.

The film had an increasing energy which I liked, and I’m distinct you would like it too, if you let yourself inside the film.

A man named Frank Bigelow (Edmund O’Brian) shows up at Los Angeles police site to narrate a murder: his have. Frank is dying of gleaming toxin poisoning. Rudolph Mate’s “D.O.A.” is a film noir classic. And it takes the cynical conception typical of the genre. Frank is a man whose fate is entirely beyond his control. As the audience roots for Frank to solve the mystery and gain his murderer, fate unabashedly mocks his efforts. Frank is a dying man; what earthly disagreement will it earn if he finds his killer? Whatever Frank does, the result will be the same. And it’s all because he notarized a bill of sale…one out of hundreds of bills of sales. Who knew what being a notary could lead to? But for a movie with such a cynical epic to yelp, “D.O.A.” has always been immensely favorite. I consider that’s because Frank Bigelow is an “everyman” who rises to the occasion when difficult circumstances require it. He’s not too shimmering and not too monotonous. He has a nice girlfriend…to whom he isn’t entirely faithful. He’s basically a apt guy, works hard, but improper. And when fate deals him a awful deal, he finds within him a strength and determination that even he may not have known he had. He’s going to solve the mystery if it’s the last thing he does. Even though it will be the last thing he does. Edmund O’Brian does an admirable job of conveying Frank’s imperfection, his initial incredulity at his scrape, and then his determination when he stares reality in the face and decides to choose matters into his contain hands, to the extent that he can. The opening scene in which Frank enters the police area to record his bear kill is a stroke of genius. What a map to hook an audience! The only fault that I catch with the film are the ridiculous noises that we hear every time Frank spies an shapely woman. Their tone is completely bad to the film, and they are a actual blot on Dimitri Tiomkin’s otherwise generous procure.

The DVD (This refers to the Roan Group DVD only) : This film looks too contrasty and lacking in subtle tonality to me. Not having seen the film on the silver hide, I don’t know if it was originally like that, if there was a spot with the print, or if it’s a awful transfer. But the film stocks available in 1950 were technologically powerful better than this DVD would lead you to fill. The main menu on the disc doesn’t reveal up before the movie. The disc starts to play as soon as it is inserted into the player, so you have to either hit the menu button on your remote or regain yourself onto your couch snappily. There are two bonus features: An interview with actress Beverly Campbell (now Beverly Garland) in which she describes her experience being blacklisted by the Hollywood studios for several years following her appearance in “D.O.A.” And there are a few pages of text that you can read about film noir in general and “D.O.A.” in particular. Beverly Garland’s narrative is piquant, but the DVD seems to be set aside together in a slipshod manner.

I honest wanted to add to his astounding reviews that in my plan the Image dvd edition is the one to grasp.

A really gargantuan looking transfer, with very gripping image, which is what I value the most. There is only one awful shot in the later portion of the movie obviously taken from an nasty source.

Wow, I can’t have how blown away I was by this. Ti Lung is broad as the lead. He plays it straight faced all the contrivance through, and he uses this awesome spinning blade and gets into tons of fights. It’s a wuxia, so that means that some immoral dude is trying to become the leader of the martial arts world. Ti Lung has to protect some special darts from the unfriendly guy, but as you can guess it isn’t going to be easy. There are 5 assassins after Ti Lung, 4 of them played by Ku Feng, Fan Mei Sheng, Lily Li and Norman Chu. There’s really no point trying to account for the record. It’s impartial typical wuxia stuff, except it’s a lot easier to understand than most of Chor Yuen’s other movies. Basically, all that you need to know is that Ti Lung is smart frosty in this, there are tons of superior fights, and the final fight doesn’t disappoint. The main villain is one abominable old-fashioned man. It’s a short final fight, but very satisfying. The sets are even better than the normal Shaw Brothers standards, and I must mention how darkly shot the film is. I only remember a couple scenes that weren’t completely shadowy. A shimmering movie in every intention, a perfect 5/5.

The Image DVD has grand describe quality. Subtitles are well written and the Chinese track sounds expedient, and there’s an English dub. Not a perfect sounding dub, but sterling enough. Here are a couple of my accepted lines-

This is an first-rate film. The site is convoluted, but understandable. The region is classic top-notch versus spoiled, with a few set twists. This film, shot mainly on sets, has an otherworldly ‘fantasy of China’ feel to it. Ti Lung is a gifted martial artist, but also a shapely actor. He brings a spacious authenticity to the role.

There is a itsy-bitsy amount of gratuitious nudity and sex, but not enough to detract from an otherwise glowing morality play.

“The Mummy” receives a very nice survey Blu-ray transfer for this unique edition of the movie. Capturing the adventurous elements of films like “Indiana Jones” and injecting it into the basic chronicle for the 1932 film “The Mummy”, Stephen Sommers creates a terrific, enteraining film. For those eager in a synposis of the set, I’ll provide it at the kill of the review because you’ve probably already seen this.

The Blu-ray transfer looks quite proper here with intrepid colors that more closely consume the current theatrical presentation than the DVD. The image is crisp and while there’s evidently some digital noise reduction applied, Universal hasn’t completely cleaned away all the film grain which is a wonderful thing because when that’s done you actually lose sharpness and clarity (it is restored with a loss of detail via Edge Enhancement like the novel reissue of “Patton” which went overboard with digitally cleaning up the film) . The best thing that Universal could have done here was to leave the grain intact and dispense with the Edge Enhancement. I suspect that the same source was broken-down for the Blu-ray as was customary for the HD-DVD edition but that the Edge Enhancement is more transparent here because of higher resolution.

What does all of that mean? The film looks extremely marvelous but could recognize intellectual. Unruffled, on the whole this looks considerable better than the DVD edition.

The extras are composed presented in 480p (which is standard DVD definition) so be aware those haven’t been updated. However, Universal has made this a U-Control disc where you can customize the extras as you view the film (something developed for and carried over from HD-DVD) . You do acquire the ability to seek the visual commentary/extras while watching the film. All of the novel extras from the DVD have been ported over for this edition. All of the extras and the film are on the single disc edition here (unlike the DVD which has most of the extras on a second disc) .

A group of explorers led by Evelyn (Rachel Weisz) and Rick (Brendan Fraiser) bustle to gather the riches of an Egyptian tomb and kill up reviving Im-Ho-Tep (Arnold Vosloo) an Egyptian High Priest buried alive for his section in a conspiracy to slay the Pharoah. Brought help by the Egyptian Book of the Dumb, Im-Ho-Tep takes revenge on those who plundered his tomb and seeks the Book of the Wearisome to bring abet his beloved princess who helped him raze the Pharoah.

It is a immense popcorn flick.

No doubt about it, this is a consuming flick. All the ingredients approach together to compose this a very enchanting film. Naturally there’s plenty of action which takes station against some huge sets and is enhanced by impressive special effects. Rio Bravo is one of a handful of movies (inspect also The Level-headed Man) that belies the one-note, tough-guy stereotype that so many people associate with John Wayne. Here he is endearing (his scenes with Walter Brennan are hilarious and agreeable) and, dare I say, even somewhat sensitive in his enjoy scheme (his firm blueprint of “treatment” for Dean Martin’s alcoholic character is something a counselor friend of mine finds priceless) . The rest of the cast is unbelievable as well: Brennan is cranky, Martin is wounded but charismatic, Angie Dickinson is sly and assured and Ricky Nelson, surprisingly, does more than objective fill his hold and glimpse graceful (*and* he sings a duet with Dean Martin) . Everyone keen here obviously had a ton of fun making the movie, but more importantly the film exudes that sense of satisfactory cheer without undercutting the epic tension. Director Howard Hawks certainly had a mountainous deal to do with the hastily pacing and the tightness of the ensemble, both of which issue that the film never seems to accelerate, even in calm moments. In short, a western for people who don’t like westerns and a John Wayne movie for people who don’t like John Wayne.

“Rio Bravo” is a very sharp and quality film pleasurable for the entire family.

The film boasts an all-star cast that boasts a wealth of talent. John Wayne is the tough sherrif John T. Chance, who has to absorb a prisoner charged with execute in his diminutive jail awaiting the arrival of the territory mediate. Wayne gives one of his best performances. Dean Martin plays Wayne’s terrorized drunk deputy. Martin surprises everyone by showing unbiased how unbelievable an actor he is. In a difficult role, Martin excels. Angie Dickenson is Wayne’s esteem interest. Dickenson’s role is also an emotionally fascinating bit of acting, but she pulls it off easily with room to spare. Walter Brennan is Wayne’s crippled deputy and he also excels and provides laughable relief. Brennan is so convincing as the crippled leg deputy that many fans of Brennan believed that he was actually crippled in proper life. Brennan walked as sterling as anyone and it is a tribute to him that he convinced all of us that he had a bum leg! Rounding out the cast is the very young heartthrob Ricky Nelson, who plays “Colorado”, a trailhand with a excellent gun. Nelson is in over his head here as an actor, but was probably included in the film for his ability to bring in the female audience. Ward Bond and Claude Akins round out the ample cast.

Director Howard Hawks uses the cast to his advantage. His directorship keeps the film titillating along at a sincere scamper. Interestingly, the first several minutes of the film has no dialogue at all! John Wayne speaks the first line about 4 minutes into the film after powerful action has already taken position.

This film represents Hawks’ and Wayne’s response to the movie “High Noon”, which both men despised. Wayne and Hawks were afraid by “High Noon” as no townspeople came to the wait on of the sherrif who had to face down a gang of thugs by himself. Both men believed that the superior men and women of the community would rally to the side of helpful and face down detestable. In ‘Rio Bravo”, Wayne’s sherrif does not go it alone, but gets back from several sources.

Dimitri Tiomkin’s accumulate is a great one, originally made for the classic western, “Red River”. Dean Martin and Ricky Nelson combine their vocal talents in the duet “My Rifle, My Pony, And Me”. Bear it or not, Walter Brennan adds his vocal talents in a song that follows!

“Rio Bravo” is a very satisfying and gripping film fit for the entire family. There is no profanity, savor scenes are done discretely, and the expected violence is not graphic or gratuitous. As a kid, this was one of my current “John Wayne” movies. As an adult, it continues to be a celebrated, and I occupy it will be a celebrated of yours too. Out of 10 stars, I’d give it a solid 9.

First off, I am not a slave to the book when judging adaptations. I understand and delight in that what often works in books doesn’t always translate onto the gigantic or shrimp mask. BUT, having said that this is NOT an adaptation. Instead it feels more like the Ciff notes as written by someone who has never read the books. I know that movies have to leave out a lot of details, but “Earthsea” leaves out nearly every detail. Instead, it feels like a total strip down of the story; like Ms. Le Guin’s discarded first draft.

As a fantasy by-the-books movie, I can recommend this only to people who are unprejudiced looking to pass a few hours.

But, as has been expressed below by Ms Pamela Thomas, I am fearful that people will view this and completely ignore the books. If I hadn’t read the books and saw the movie my first reaction would be: “Oh boy, those Le Guin books determined are overrated.” And that can’t be further from the truth!

Throughout the last two decades of the 20th century the fantasy genre gained a huge number of followers, which initially might have been influenced by encounters with J.R.R. Tolkien’s adventures or roll playing games such as Dungeons & Dragons. This group of people has steadily grown through the attend of computer games, books, and other media that brings the audience away from the reality of the human existence. The televised miniseries Sage of Earthsea is an adventure that brings the audience away from reality to the world of Earthsea where the world consists of a substantial number of islands. The author Ursula K. Le Guin created this world and she has a broad number of dedicated readers. Legend of Earthsea opens in a little island village where the blacksmith’s son, Ged (Shawn Ashmore) discovers that he has magical powers. Ged, a restless young man, saves the town from an attack through the expend of magic, which brings forth the wizard Ogion (Danny Glover) . Ogion requests that Ged becomes his student, but Ged’s father initially rejects the demand. Nonetheless, Ged becomes the pupil of Ogion, as he begins his slide on becoming a wizard.

On this drag the audience gets to follow how Ged is coming of age through foolish magical stunts and deadly encounters with dragons and other unsafe creatures. Ged builds lasting friendships and eventually discovers the wonder of admire. Through many adventures with Ged the audience will experience both suspense and drama with some wisdom.

The mini-series seems to be based on a number of clichés from other fantasy films such as Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and Willow (1988) among other films. This hurts the fable, as does the visual experience through some CGI effects that near across with visual awkwardness. If one truly wants to experience the world of Earthsea the audience should reads Ursula K. Le Guin’s books, which are far genuine to this TV tale.

Earthsea had immense potential, as the books offer a solid foundation upon which a film can be made. However, it seems that this film shows the affects of too many chefs, which leaves the audience with a somewhat flat fantasy experience. There are enthralling subplots and themes, but it never takes off and flies by itself. It merely remains standing on the ground displaying a monument without value, which in the waste will leave most viewers disappointed. It might only be a rental recommendation to those hardcore fantasy enthusiasts that discover everything about an alternative reality.

If you want to know why Marlon Brando inspired and influenced an entire generation of actors, perceive On the Waterfront. His Terry Malloy is proper down to his fingernails. Brando in his prime took and held the conceal like no one else, absolutely magnetic, whether as a seeming uncaring pug with unawakened nobility in his heart (Terry) or a Mexican revolutionary (behold Viva Zapata) or a racist jet ace (Sayonara) or whatever.

Matching Brando is a perfect cast. Karl Malden, Eve Marie Saint, Rod Steiger, Lee J. Cobb, there isn’t a missed imprint or lesser performance from any of them, not to mention the thugs and real-life dockworkers surrounding them. Elia Kazan was an actor’s director, and his skill at eliciting good performance is nowhere more evident than here. He also knew how to execute a movie, and his work with the camera and pacing is first rate. The B&W photography is gritty, stunning and serves to locate the film in time and station while eliminating distraction from the performances.

You must know the memoir by now, culled from the trusty dockside union problems of the day, Budd Schulberg & Kazan fashioned a myth that is about courage, loyalty (misplaced and otherwise), responsibilty and the willingness to stand up for something, stand alone if need be, and in that stance to risk the mistrust and misunderstanding and ostracism of your friends, your society, and the loss of your state in the world and even your life. They created a considerable melodrama of greed & corruption, of the struggle with compromise and conscience, of loss and redemption.

Frankly, this is unbiased astronomical movie making. It isn’t done any better than this, and if for some reason you have never seen this film, treat yourself to excellence.

This is one of the best, don’t miss it, and don’t miss one of our greatest actors in his prime.

Columbia continues its downward spiral where its classic DVD output is concerned. “On The Waterfront” is not only a mountainous Academy Award winning film, it is an American icon. The location is concerned with a union stooge, Terry Malloy (Marlon Brando) who eventually realizes that the intimidation racket of his boss, Johnny Excellent (Lee J. Cobb) is an gross and destructive force in his community. Eva Marie Saint costars as Edie Doyle, the sister of a man who was thrown off of a rooftop on Gracious? s orders. It is partially through her treasure and the stoic commitment of Father Barry (Carl Malden) that Terry reforms his ways. Rod Steiger is particularly effective as Charley Malloy, Terry? s brother.

Quite simply: this transfer is a let down. Disagreement levels are extremely rude, stunning details are lost in video noise reduction enhancement and digital grit, grain and noise are detected throughout. The gray scale is poorly balanced. Scratches, chips and distortions in the modern camera negative stick out like a hover thumb. The audio is mono and undistinguished. It’s not a abominable mix, though there are moments where a runt background stammer crops up. No extras! Oh, advance on Columbia. This is one of your BEST PICTURES and it gets this kind of treatment on DVD?!? It? could’a been a contenda’!?
