Rather than review the assure of this almost universally beloved film, I’m honest going to comment about the quality of the 2006 60th Anniversary Edition DVD itself. I’ve since written an updated review about a original edition of this title, now available in a “Two-Disc Collector’s State.” Please accept that review — which was posted on December 13, 2008. (Amazon has posted my 2006 review in both places — even though the “60th Anniversary Edition” DVD is DIFFERENT from the “Two-Disc Collector’s Situation”. Read my write-up for the “Two-Disc Collector’s State” — again, it’s DATED 2008 and too early to unpleasant among the “most favorable” reviews — to better choose which product you take.)

I’ve owned nearly every version of this title in almost every format available on home video during the past 25 years. It’s right that the Inform of this Viacom/Paramount DVD — including its special features — is identical to the Republic Pictures Home Video release more than 10 years ago.

However, this 60th Anniversary edition is spectacular for several different and extremely vital reasons. (I’ll address the criticisms some people have leveled about the sound on this 2006 DVD in a runt bit, so stick with me.)

Buy,Download, Or Stream It’s a Wonderful Life! Click Here

You don’t have to be a technical expert to immediately recognize the striking improvement of the recount AND sound in this 2006 edition. The print is crystal-clear and in my belief, has more vividness and sharpness than ALL other previous releases of this title on home video.

Proof? I do my “passe” THX-version DVD issued by Republic Pictures / Artisan Home Video (the aged DVD gold standard for this title) — into my Sony multi-changer DVD player — and watched and listened to every frame of this film AND its special features. I stopped and started this “older” DVD in several spots — and stopped and started the unusual 2006 Paramount edition repeatedly — so I could compare quality almost “side-by-side.”

Hands down — this 2006 version is wonderful. The spots and dirt have been wiped spruce, the sharpness and disagreement are arguably better than what film audiences saw 60 years ago. There are no conventional spots, no jumped frames and no lint, fiber or hair fragments along the edges or jumping across the cover. I absorb the technicians at Paramount (which acquired Republic Pictures Home Video) — digitally cleaned EVERY frame of the last DVD release — so that the film now looks like a million dollars. It’s almost too pristine, if there is such a thing. No jump cuts, no “jump ahead” sound breaks, no fogged-out scenes, nothing stale — with the result being the cleanest and purest version of “It’s A Fantastic Life” ever issued in home video history.

It gets better. English subtitles were available on older DVD versions of this title, but the 2006 version has a cleaner typeface, wiping out some of the confusing and unnecessary attributions of “who’s saying what” that were disruptive to some hearing-impaired viewers. In this 2006 version, you’ll secure a mostly straight, line-by-line reading of what’s being said — as it’s being said.

Meanwhile, the DVD’s special features — which include the same pair of documentaries produced in 1990 and 1991 — are identical in that they were shot on video tape hence there isn’t powerful improvement in characterize quality. However, subtitles that WERE NOT available for these special features — are NOW available in this 2006 edition. The only “extra” to the previous “gold standard” that remains unchanged — is the current 1946 trailer. Subtitles are not available and it has the same raggedness and dirt commonly seen with vintage trailers stored separately from the films they venerable to advertise.

I’m highly significant of re-issued DVDs that seem nothing more than an excuse to squeeze more dollars out of buyers for the same material with fresh packaging. But this 2006 Paramount DVD version of “It’s A Fantastic Life” is the best to date. It is NOT in color. (I occupy a colorized version for younger people who can’t stand black-and-white. Despite controversy surrounding colorization, know that the 2007 “Two-Disc Collector’s Area” has the same 2006 60th Anniversary black-and-white edition you notice here — plus a current “colorized” version. This version uses the same pristine print — but has the added bonus of boasting the best “color” hues ever seen for this film, using the latest image technology available. Despite my preference for black-and-white, the quality of this recent colorized version is impressive.)

Meanwhile, let’s address the criticisms about the sound on this current DVD. Go encourage a dinky bit. Mighty was made when Republic Pictures Home Video got the THX LucasFilm sound system seal of approval for “It’s A Amazing Life” during the 1990s. But it was smooth two-channel mono with negligible equalization of sound effects. In this 2006 DVD, you’ll collect consistent two-channel mono and decent sound equalization to minimize “booming” and over-modulated portions in the film. In the ancient versions, you had to turn down the volume a notch during the musical portions — and turn it assist up when the dialogue came succor. It’s a nit-pick, but you really explore the contrast if you’re crazy enough to do a side-by-side comparison like I did.

As for the digital sound “pops” that perfectionists hold bringing up — they’re apt. They’re even in the spots famed by another sparkling reviewer who listed time codes where you can regain them. But in my belief, unless you brace yourselves for them to near like a booming roar — unless you purposely crank up your speakers to carry sound throughout your house — yeah, you “might” be annoyed if you question the same perfection for a film made in 1946 as you would for a film made in 2006. Honestly, the disproportionate attention given to these digital “pops” is, in my thought, giving fence-sitters the impression that they’re supersonic cracks of lightning that will compose people jump out of their seats. I didn’t twitch at all. They almost “blended” into the 60-year-old soundtrack. Yes, I know they’re digital defects, but do you remember the zillion “pops” scattered throughout dirty prints of “It’s A Astounding Life” with filthy optical soundtracks? The audio on this 2006 DVD peaceful wins. You have EVERY Factual to seek information from perfection for your dollars. But as a person who’s more fastidious than average — I don’t fill most buyers will care about a few “pops” in a film that’s this venerable. Combine the overall improvements with the relatively extreme cost of this DVD — and I tranquil say this is the BEST experience of “It’s A Improbable Life” I’ve ever SEEN and HEARD on home video.

Finally, another reason to grasp this DVD. It’s frail news to some, but it’s not widely known that this version of “It’s A Fabulous Life” can only be broadcast by NBC. It customary to air a zillion times during the holidays on every TV position on earth. It was a swiftly draw to fetch tired of even a trim film you consider you know by heart. But Viacom/Paramount now owns this version of “It’s A Amazing Life” outright and NBC has unusual licensing rights to air it fair once or twice after Thanksgiving. This is a proper thing for future generations to indulge in.

So junk the ancient, assume this version and be glad. It may feel painful, but it’s worth it. And no, I DON’T work for Amazon OR for Paramount Home Video.

A beautifully crafted film that proved to be the apex of triple Oscar-winner (1934, 1936, 1938) Frank Capra’s renowned career, and the epitome of his cycle of works celebrating the “current man”. Mr. Deeds found himself suddenly wealthy, Mr. Smith went to Washington as a Senator, and John Doe became the focus of a socio-political movement; but “Life”‘s George Bailey never distinguishes himself outside of his runt hometown of Bedford Falls — his brother Harry is the one who becomes a war hero, and his friend Sam Wainwright is the one who achieves financial success. George’s triumph is simply his personal integrity, his code of ethics, and his strength of character — his goodness, if you will — during the unexciting course of his ordinary, mundane existence. In this respect, George is more an Everyman than any other Capra protagonist, bewitching strong audience identification and response.

Buy,Download, Or Stream It’s a Wonderful Life! Click Here

In one of the most handsome performances ever given in an American film, James Stewart is proper as George. It’s not an easy role to play because so mighty camouflage time is spent focusing on George’s subtle reactions to the world around him. One improbable moment comes at the bid space when George slowly begins to acquire the news of his brother’s original marriage and unusual career opportunity, and how his brother’s fortune will ruin his maintain hopes of leaving Bedford Falls and the family business. Stewart’s face is astonishing in this scene, as surprised realization fades into aloof disappointment and finally, gentle graciousness and acceptance. Stewart’s tour de force is given strong help by a satisfactory cast of Capra stalwarts, including Lionel Barrymore, Thomas Mitchell, H. B. Warner, and the phenomenal Beulah Bondi (as George’s mother) . And Donna Reed, in one of her first romantic leading roles after a number of years playing supporting ingenues and bits, is profitable in the warm but unglamorous role of George’s loving wife, Mary.

The Republic Home Video DVD is definitely the edition of this classic to have. Like the LaserDisc before it, the DVD offers a crystal distinct, beautifully restored film-to-video transfer which will amaze and delight anyone who is familiar only with the unfriendly multi-generational VHS cassettes, or the dreadful colorized version, that were commonly screened support in the tedious 1970′s and 1980′s. There are some nice bonus features on the DVD, including a “making of” documentary and the theatrical trailer. This is one DVD that you’ll never regret adding to your home theatre collection!

Trivia note: If you’re a fan of this movie, try finding a copy of film historian David Thomson’s 1985 original “Suspects” which continues George’s record and relates the characters from this movie to many others (did you know that Donna Reed’s “Mary Bailey” is actually the sister of Gene Tierney’s “Laura”?!, etc.) … gigantic fun!

However, this was one of my current shows when it was on in the unhurried 90′s (I cannot beget it’s been 10 years already!!!) . And, it is serene in my top 5 of all time to this day.

Why? Well, for one thing, unbiased leer what some of the key people eager have gone on to do after making Sports Night: The West Coast (Creator/Writer/Producer Aaron Sorkin, actor Josh Malina, plus guest spots by many SportsNight regulars), Six Feet Under (Peter Krause), Desperate Housewives (Felicity Huffman) . For each of these pros, ‘Sports Night’ was a key launchpad for the rest of their careers.

(And, of course, the already well-respected Robert Guillaume was a key member of the cast. He suffered a debilitating stroke mid-production and collected gave bravura perfomances on his return.)

This display is one of the rarest of TV gems: a comedy that does not pander, that challenges you to maintain up. Anyone who regularly watched the first few seasons of ‘The West Wing’ will contemplate one of Sorkin’s current devices, the fast-talking, no-pauses, walking-down-the-hallway conversation. This contrivance is not to everyone’s taste, but it’s a stout one for the correct actors and writers, and a definite species of TV viewer.

And yet, the point to rewards even casual viewers with witty, incisive, insightful commentary and critique of honest about everything. It’s honest insensible silly most of the time.

The tagline was “It’s about sports. The scheme Charlie’s Angels was about law enforcement”. And that about sums it up. Its focus is on human relationships in that most volatile environment, the workplace.

This workplace objective happens to be an even more of a pressure-cooker than most: a TV studio producing live sports news shows. Reflect ‘ESPN SportsCenter’. Yet, it’s not supposed to actually be SportsCenter, since they wisely wink to reality and refer to “Bristol” (the genuine city where ESPN is headquartered) as their competition. I always idea this was a clever plan, since ESPN is a sister company to ABC, the network ‘Sports Night’ ran on. Eveyone else (Fox, CNN, et al) has tried to beat ESPN at its gain game, and lost, and ‘Sports Night’ keeps that feeling of being a decided underdog.

Though the stakes aren’t as high for the rest of the world, the pressure of the environment to the people in it (and therefore by extension to the viewer) is great like Sorkin’s ‘West Wing’ — not as many dramatic world crises, but mild plenty of “must react NOW!!!” raw material that Sorkin and team mine for sublime comical execute.

Yes, it’s silly, very amusing in fact. But what appealed to me most is that quite often Sports Night could be poignant, even at times dramatic. Again, not the faux-gavitas that most sitcoms try to effect with that corny, “a very special episode of…”, ripe-for-satire phoniness. When there is deep human emotion to be felt, the exhibit portrays it in honest the legal quantities. Breakups, lost career opportunities, even some of the ficitious “loyal world” storylines have objective that remarkable more feeling of sincere human emotion than do honest about any other TV comedy, or even many TV dramas. Most of that reality is due to the characters being portrayed as fleshed-out human beings, at least as mighty as can be done in a 30-minute TV format. They aren’t exactly suitable to life, but they aren’t objective cardboard cut-outs either. An wonderful example is how Robert Guillaume’s real-life stroke, and subsequent return to the reveal, was handled onscreen: brilliantly, of course.

In the extinguish, if you are like me, you will worship Sports Night mainly for the charcaters themselves. I really came to like them, a lot. I wanted to know more about them. Even the guest spots were bewitching, like Felicity Huffman’s real-life husband, William H. Macy, as a point to “fixer”. That’s why the cancellation was so painful for so many. I had to wait another five years for another TV comedy that could rival it — ‘Arrested Development’, another cult fav that was killed too early. I believe if a explain like ‘Sports Night’ was pitched today, it would probably derive a comfy home on cable, and live for many seasons. However, it was at least five years ahead of its time for that. And network TV is celebrated for handling quality shows badly.

If you watched it while it was on, this box situation is a gargantuan chance to relive its greatness. If you never had the pleasure, please retract the opportunity now to peruse something very special.

Writer/creator Aaron Sorkin and director Thomas Schlamme went on to execute NBC’s “The West Waft” during the second season of this fantastic series.

From the beginning, ABC had no clue of how to handle this note. First, they insisted that the producers ad a laugh track, because you don’t know when to laugh. Then, they started to promote it like a soap opera, because it had serious issues to deal with at times.

Ultimately, the quality of the present came through. A amazing cast provided noble performances. Josh Charles (“A Few Favorable Men”, “SWAT”) and Sabrina Lloyd (“Sliders”) are the MVPs here, consistently giving the indicate it’s heart. Peter Krause (“Six Feet Under”, “Dirty Sexy Money”), initially stiff in his “on air” role as Casey McCall, settled in well mid-first season.

The genuine gem here is Robert Guilamme (“Benson”), his Issac Jaffe is an expedient character brought to life with his gentle touch. Guilamme’s real-life stroke was written into the series, and when he returned in the second season made for some fantastic moments and sly dialogue delivered by the customary actor.

Unfortunately, try though they may, Yowl! Factory has been unable to provide the option of killing the laugh track in the area. Fortunately, they have provided a titanic current place which beats the current cheap, no-frills region that Disney provided several years ago.

Perhaps the most prolific mathematician who has ever lived and a strong candidate for the best mathematician of all time, Paul Erdos is the mathematical equivalent of a mega-caffeinated bumblebee. Traveling from residence to dwelling packing his formidable load of mathematical sweets, his goals are to design, solve and section. Generations of mathematicians are deeply indebted to him, both personally and professionally.

Born in Hungary in 1913, Erdos has known his piece of personal tragedy. Two major wars, one containing a “civil” war of extermination of his “kind” (he is Jewish), as well as postwar political ostracism due to his “communist” leanings have all served to mold his life.

The producers of this film chose to avoid mathematics and concentrate on the person. Like me, you will probably be surprised at the quality of his table tennis game, Although his humor is pessimistic, it is positive throughout the 57-minute running time of this film that Erdos is a definite thinker.

Like the fable of others who succeed and inspire, Erdos’s epic also has the ability to humble. Being an eyewitness to greatness has a humbling achieve. “Genius” and “colorful” are terms often overused when describing people and their work, but in this case one needs to search for superlatives to get an lawful description.

A visual portrait of one of the world’s most inspiring people, this tape is an absolute must for all academic libraries.

As others have mentioned, this is perhaps the only pro-war film ever made about our involvement in Vietnam, either at the time of the war or since.

Pretty grand these days, nobody espouses a pro-war stance on the Vietnam conflict. It was not a “righteous” war, after all, and the war will always be section and parcel with the agony of America’s social chaos in the behind 60′s and early 70′s. However, at the time, the social battle lines were well defined between the peaceniks and the hawks; those against the war, and those all in favor of it. Without the thirty-plus years of hindsight to back them establish this conflict in perspective, the hawks were exquisite gung-ho. Likewise, the the peaceniks, who belief that if we honest “admire each other” everything would be alright, looks fine naive and childish. If only the world were so simple.

Like the war, this film engenders strong feelings in those who peer it. The DUKE was a known hawk, and you can witness it shine through in every line, and in every scene. Like most hawks at the time, I suspect that The DUKE simply concept Vietnam was fair like any other war (most likely, World War II), and it was incomprehensible to them that anyone would be against it. The film, in turn, reflects the hawk viewpoint.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Green Berets! Click Here

In other words, you could substitute the Vietnamese with the Japanese in WWII, and the film would be more or less the same (qualified, upstanding Americans vs. gargantuan unpleasant empire) . The hold of the enemy general is pure WWII melodrama. The character of Petersen, the “scrounger”, is also a stock character from a WWII movie. The staging of the action, the commando raid, blowing up a bridge, etc., all roar WWII.

DUKE co-directs, and despite being filmed in Georgia (which looks nothing like Southeast Asia!), the results are really glorious suited. The raid to select the enemy general is funny, but tense and keen nevertheless. The characterizations are solid. The film flows nicely, and isn’t too long or too short. The cinematography is workable, and at times, even impressive. There’s plenty of action, too!

When you sight DUKE react to the child running from helicopter to helicopter looking for Petersen, you cannot relieve but have respect for this film. Certainly one of the best endings in American film history follows. Politics and anti-war sentiment of today’s PC society aside, this is a large war film that honors the best of the best; the Green Berets.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Green Berets! Click Here

Let me steal a moment and say a word or two about David Janssen’s role as George Beckworth, the reporter for a left-wing and anti-war newspaper. The character is a shrimp too definite, and at first, a puny too strong on the anti-war sentiment. His conversion was a exiguous too predictable, but the handling of his conversion to pro-war is very well-handled. Ultimately, I reflect it was a believable transformation, and this is due entirely to Janssen’s talent. In the hands of another, less skilled actor, the Beckworth character could have been a grand sore point, but Janssen makes Beckworth a still force, a wall of anti-war sentiment needing to be erroded away by the reality of the dwelling he finds himself in. In many ways, I believe Janssen’s underplayed advance for Beckworth makes him seem more exact, and ultimately sells the character. It helps sell the movie too, despite our unique perspective on the war.

Appearing in supporting roles are Jack Soo (Crop Yemana on “Barney Miller”), George Takei (Sulu on “Star Lumber”), and Bruce Cabot. Cabot had starred in a mountainous many films, and “The Green Beret” is one of his last. He was a celebrated DUKE co-star, appearing with DUKE in “Hellfighters”, “Large Jake”, “Chisum”, “The War Wagon”, “In Harm’s Blueprint”, “McLintock!”, “Hatari!”, and others. Cabot is probably most eminent for rescuing Fay Wray from King Kong. Also on hand is The DUKE’s son, Patrick Wayne. Patrick appears as the commander of a Seabee team, following in his father’s footsteps (DUKE starred in the eminent homage to the outfit, “The Fighting Seabees”) .

DUKE fans should try to locate a copy of the video “No Substitute For Victory” (available on this residence), in which DUKE hosts a right-wing documentary seek at our reasons for fighting in Southeast Asia. Watching this documentary after the film will give the viewer modern insights into the thinking of the hawks at the time, and their station during the Vietnam conflict.

If you ever read Gustav Hasford’s “The Short-Timers” (which “Fat Metal Jacket” was based on) you know how he felt about this movie: “Let’s peruse the Duke and Mr. Sulu karate-chop Victor Charlie in a Kodicolor fantasy about Vietnam.” In other words, he notion it was bunk. So does everyone else on the left, who have bought into the epic that Vietnam was a purely guerilla war and that the human-wave assaults employed by the NVA/VC on Col. Kirby’s camp in the film would never have happened in steady life. In point of fact almost 90% of the fighting in Vietnam was of the outmoded type in the Central Highlands or the valleys (“We Were Soldiers”) while only 10% of the troops were employed in the rice paddies you stare in movies like “Platoon.” Whenever the NVA fought out in the inaugurate, a la the Tet Offensive, they were well and truly beaten, but their leadership was ruthless and understood that by trading 5 Vietnamese lives for one American, the U.S. will to fight would eventually crash. They knew the American public had only tepid aid for Vietnam and would not acquire the losses. The result, of course, we all know. Hanoi Jane what she wanted and so did Uncle Ho. Too poor Jane didn’t go attend in say, 1975 and use some time in a re-education camp. They could have taken pics of her in a tiger cage, eating bugs and rotting from typhus.

If you are reading this you probably know the myth of the movie.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Green Berets! Click Here

John Wayne’s Col. Kirby and his elite Special Forces “A” Team (no, not the one with Hannibal and Face and B.A. Barracus) is sent to Vietnam to set aside obnoxious camps which offer protection to the local farmers from the murderous Viet Cong (whose crimes against their absorb people are well documented here) . The soldiers advise the locals how to fight while providing basic medical care and 20th century improvements to their primeval scheme of life. There is the usual great John Wayne type battle as the VC try to overrun the camp, followed by a commando raid deep into enemy territory, and a tragic-heroic ending. But the movie is more than the sum of its parts. It is not mere entertainment, it is personal propiganda, designed to exhibit the Duke’s argument for why America was fighting in Vietnam at all. The only failing is its sappiness and jingoism, which beget it easy for opponents to ridicule. But making fun of it doesn’t pick away the fact that the Duke’s argument was based on something he is rarely credited for — human decency. What “honest” did we have in Vietnam? I guess the same “accurate” we had to land on the beaches of Normandy. We had no “proper” at all — it was objective the “correct thing to do”, to succor a abominable government (South Vietnam) against a great worse government (North Vietnam) that traditional methods like mass killings of teachers, civil servants, nuns, missionaries, and village chiefs to destabilze the South and forcibly unite the country. You can argue about the legitimacy of taking sides in a civil war all day, but any country that uses methods like burying people alive and raping women to death as a matter of military policy probably deserves to be opposed, yes?

Anyway, let me select a moment to say I Adore THIS FREAKIN’ MOVIE. Growing up, helpful musty Washington D.C. Channel 20 (remember when you only had ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS and your one local channel? Channel 20 was ours) played this movie, (along with “The Battle of the Bulge” and “The Bridge at Remagen” and some other classics) about once every other day. Even the notion of it brings a smile to my face. Here was a guy, John Wayne, who had the guts to obtain a film this flag-shakingly good fly at a time when patriotism was growing unfashionable and millions of people were abandoning and spitting on the ideals that he embodied — which, by the blueprint, a few of us tranquil bear moral. As a movie, “The Green Berets” has a hard ideology of anti-communism and shows the newfangled Special Forces as a sort of elite brotherhood consecrated to fight against it. I assume a lot of the abhor directed against this movie comes from the surity of Kirby’s (meaning John Wayne’s) beliefs. They are rock-solid and not up for debate or negotiation. He understands what will (and did) happen to Vietnam if the North wins the war, and fights bitterly to prevent this from happening, while simultaneously trying to accept over a stubborn journalist who has legitimate doubts about our involvement. No inquire of, this movie is jingoistic and predictable, a Vietnam war movie packed in WWII casing, but who cares?

Jean-Claude Van Damme has reunited with Director Ringo Lam (Maximum Risk) for the movie “Replicant.” To my surprise, this movie delivers a distinguished punch and why it did not find a theatrical release in the United States is unknown. However, it deserved one. This is not the average straight to video/DVD type of movie. The production values are high and the acting by Rooker and Van Damme is very profitable. Actually, it is Van Damme’s best performance ever and is the caliber of any action star in the “A” market today.

Van Damme plays a convincing serial Killer and Clone who is directed to track him down. Both characters are well acted. He, for once, does not over act in two roles which could have been very easy to do. Rooker plays a street cop who is obessed with catching the killer. His character is developed well for an action flick and the two pull if off nicely.

The fight scenes are terrific and the stunts are large. For action fans-this film is a must. For others, it may not be worth the consume, but is well worth the showing. You will be entertained.

First of all, this movie should have been released theatrically instead of going straight to Video. But since the DVD is here, Van Damme’s fans (and action fans) should check it out. It is far better than his last 4 or 5 films (which are very bad: Desert heat, Universal soldiers: The return, Double Team, Knock off) .

The narrative about cloning but director Ringo Lam made this movie highly though-provoking. Van Damme plays double role, one is the serial killer, the other role as his clone which created so the police can fetch the serial killer. Interestingly, Michael Rooker co-stars, he also appears in other cloning movie starring Arnold (The sixth day) .

The DVD is OK. Quick-witted and determined and the sound is attractive. Van Damme provided commentary tracks along with ROoker, which are quite comical. REcommended.

The second season of Adult Swim’s The Venture Bros. surpasses its first in nearly every design. The first season introduced us to the Venture universe, which is occupied by hilarious characters who never finish to arrive recent levels of incompetance. Many of the episodes were laugh-out-loud hilarious that remained so throughout the entire half hour. So if season 1 was taht helpful, yet this year is so noteworthy better, that really says something to the quality of season 2.

The precredits sequence of the season premiere, “Powerless in the Face of Death”, is fantastic to peruse, though some of its power may be lost on DVD. There was a 2-year gap between seasons 1 and 2, and season 1 ended with the deaths of Hank and Dean Venture, the title characters. In the hiatus period, there was a lot of speculation of how the exhibit would go on (Dr. Thaddeus Venture and his brother Jonas Venture, Jr. would be the current Venture Bros., Dr. Orpheus would ressurect them, Dr. Venture would clone them, Dr. Venture would exhaust the Grover Cleveland time machine to achieve them), and it would be an understatement to say that fans were eagerly awaiting to examine what happened next. Area to the tune of the song Everybody’s Free, the opening sequence is a montage of the various major characters, reminding us where they were left and how they are dealing with their various situations. Dr. Orpheus is aloof upset about the boys’ deaths, for which he blames himself, the Monarch is aloof in prison while Dr. Girlfriend appears gay, if somewhat bored, living with Phantom Limb, and the Mondarch’s henchmen have nowhere else to go after blowing up the Coccoon lair. Pete White and Master Billy Quizboy have fitted Jonas with a robotic hand replacing his deformed chicken-wing-like appendage. Meanwhile, it appears that Dr. Venture hasn’t been coping well with his sons deaths. He steals the X-1 jet, forcing his bodyguard Brock Samson to go on a global hunt for the superior doc.

By the waste of the first episode, we accept out the creepy truth about the Venture Bros, which was heavily hinted at in the first season. From there the 13 episodes of the season, with possibly one exception, are marvelous. One thing I liked this year was that there was a slight more of an overarching account to the season. The first year had episodes that were shapely noteworthy all stand-alone stories, which work with a note like the Venture Bros., but I’m a immense fan of serialized story-telling, and when I started to eye developing stories at the ruin of season 1, I was really mad. The season’s arc actually has to do with the villains, though. It is about the Monarch’s quest to net Dr. Girlfriend benefit from Phantom Limb. The first two episodes of the season demonstrate how he escapes from prison and begins to rebuild his influence. Throughout the season, episodes like “Victor. Echo. November.” and “I Know Why The Caged Bird Kills” demonstrate the hilarious sprint that the Monarch takes to secure abet his treasure from a vastly respectable villain.

Still, there are plenty of stand-alone episodes. In my concept, no other Venture episode embodies that opinion so well than “Sprint From the House of Mummies, Fraction II”. The episode satirizes multi-episode stories, as there is no Portion I, but it also pulls a astronomical trick by switching around the A and B stories. While the tale of Hank, Dean, and Brock’s slide through a cursed temple accompanied by various historical figures would normally be the focus of the episode, it is merely the backup memoir that supplements the yarn of a comical bet between Dr. Orpheus and Dr. Venture over whether magic or science is splendid. “Twenty Years to Midnight” is a sizable example of parody of adventure tales, with the Venture family trying to track down various pieces of a machine built by Hank and Dean’s grandfather. The Impossible family, a wonderfully hooked parody of the Astonishing Four, present up to acquire things more difficult for the Ventures, and a cameo by Johnny Quest (the main influence of the indicate) do for an unbelievable episode. Nearly every episode was phenominal (with the exception of “Guess Who’s Coming to Area Dinner? “, which even the creators kind of agree with), from “Fallen Arches”, which introduces Dr. Orpheus’ venerable team to “Abominate Floats”, which features a team-up of Phantom Limb and Brock.

The season ends with the 2-part extravaganza “Showdown at Cremation Creek”, which completely changes the state quo for the next season. There is a wedding, a mammoth battle led by Brock and soldiered by the Monarch’s henchmen, a bizarre fantasy sequence piquant Dean filling in the role of the lead in The Neverending Legend, and David Bowie! It ends with a substantial cliffhanger, though after having the title characters die, it would be hard to match the season 1 cliffhanger.

While there are plenty of crazy situations, the point to wouldn’t be half of what it is without the incredible characters. With few exceptions, everyone in the Venture universe is somehow a failure. Dr. Venture is utterly incompetant as a “super-scientist” despite what he believes, his sons are oblivious to nearly everything in life (Dean and Hank mediate that an erection is caused by inappropriate spirits), and Brock, though a expansive bodyguard, has no self-control. The Monarch and his henchmen can barely do their “jobs”; the Monarch is jealous, mature, and unable to understand why people can’t salvage anything done, while his henchmen are out of shape nerds who quiver at the words “Brock Samson”. Though Dr. Orpheus is a competant necromancer, he is a know-it-all workaholic who drives away the people he cares about.

Most guest stars from season 1 returned, including the Pirate Captain, the Impossibles, Peter White and Billy Quizboy, Baron Underbheit, and the Impossibles. All of these characters were loved by fans, and were effectively ancient this year as well. But there were plenty of unusual characters this year that quick became fan favorites as welll. Personally, I really want to look more of Jefferson Twighlight and The Alchemist, the two other members of Dr. Orpheus’ group the Order of the Triad. Twilight is a parody of Blade and the Alchemist is a happy monk who can’t really decided what to do with his life (voiced by Dana Snyder of Aqua Teen Hunger Force) . Dr. Henry Killinger is a hilarious “consultant” whose right purpose is better left to be found out while watching. Finally, there was the weird Observor from “Twenty Years to Midnight”, whose catchphrase “IGNORE ME!” was incredibly silly every time it was spoken.

Despite one misstep, this is a vast season of moving television. Many shows on Adult Swim’s lineup (that were created for AS) stare awful; the animation and/or station appear to be worth almost nothing, but the Venture Bros. is at the other kill of the spectrum. Despite being underrated, it is one of the funniest cartoons I’ve ever seen, ranking up there with South Park and The Simpsons.

First of all, let me moral Fernando Gonzales by saying that this point to IS collected hand-drawn … only the coloring and inking are digitally done. That’s one of the reasons it’s a celebrated of mine, really.

Now, on to the review. It’s not that I didn’t mediate Jackson and Doc would be able to top Season One. It’s that I knew they could … and they Quiet blew me away. If you’ve seen Season One of The Venture Brothers, you -need- to search for this one. It’s got everything the first had, and more … the character development, in particular, is absolutely stupendous. The boys at Astrobase Go really know their characters, and they’ve started to reveal us honest how grand.

If you like your cartoons bright, humorous, uncommon, and rotund of more clever pop culture references than you can shake a shrink ray at, check this one out. I did, at the urging of a friend, while the first season was tranquil out, and I was hardly disappointed. VB is one of the few shows on television I actually care about missing, these days. I’m looking forward to seeing what the special features and commentary have in store, too – the ones on The Venture Bros. – Season One were phenomenal.

So, in the words of Dr. Byron Orpheus… “Yes! GO, Team Venture!”

Who knew that Beau Brummell was the tabloid celebrity of his day. James Purefoy is honest astonishing as Beau – the man that changed the diagram men dressed. Matthew Rhys from Brothers & Sisters has a tiny but expansive role as Lord Byron.

The music is very catchy and I unprejudiced had fun with this tale.

Period dramas are my approved type of movie. James Purefoy (Rome,Vanity Heavenly, Mayor of Casterbridge, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, Mansfield Park) is one of my accepted actors, so this movie was destined to be a current! Historically it is of astronomical value. Objective assume, if it weren’t for Beau Brummel, our men might unexcited wear ruffles. The most marvelous supporting cast includes Hugh Bonneville(also of Mansfield Park) and Matthew Rhys. My only complaint is that this movie is too short. I am obvious this fable deserves more than it’s length of only 79 minutes and someone should be “horse whipped” or at least ashamed of the stunted status of this production. Now, if we might only be able to seize “Blackbeard” starring James Purefoy, on DVD as well! One may only hope!

This movie is worthy more than an cross and modern comedy. One reason for its cult following has been consistently missed by the critics: repeated viewings lisp surprising layers of meaning and an intricate web of symbolism.

At the heart of this film is the timeless debate known as “nature vs. nurture”: are we more a product of our genes, or of our environment? How grand of an do does our upbringing have on our likelihood to turn out as either a law-abiding member of society (a society which in this movie is of dubious merit, as represented by Hi’s job and his unctuous boss) or as a criminal deviant from its norms?

The symbolism in this film is rich and evocative–while always contributing to the comedy. Trace how often the adult characters sob and carry on like infants. Ticket the draw the escaped convicts are “born” into the outside world. Stamp the marriage of a convict and a police officer, and the dissimilarity in their families visible in the brief wedding shot. Impress the juxtaposition of milk poured over cereal with the infant’s feeding bottle, as Evelle observes, “Ya don’t breast feed him, he’ll detest you for it later. That’s why we injure up in prison.” And brand the frequent employ of phrases such as “that’s natural,” as opposed to “you’re not being legal to your nature” or “mother didn’t worship me.” As Hi observes, “maybe it’s my upbringing, maybe it’s honest that my genes got screwed up, I don’t know.”

The quasi-biblical, poetical and aphorism-laden language the characters spend in the-state-adjacent-to-Utah is both touching and laughable. Every word of the film is a finely polished gem. Ed’s puny opinion is “the solution to all our problems, and the respond to all our prayers.” Her infertile womb is a “rocky dwelling where my seed can collect no hold.” And as Hi later writes in a touching letter to his dearest Edwina, “I feel the verbalize gathering even now…I cannot tarry…better I should go, send you money, and let you curse my name.” On the other hand, the crotchety Arizona characters also have a mighty literalness of expression. A packet of balloons does not blow up into comic shapes, not “unless round is silly.” And as the venerable codger in the bank robbery points out, “If I freeze, I can’t rightly plunge, and if I descend, I’m gonna be in motion!”

Even the music in this film is perfectly executed, from the hilarious yodeling and whistling of the main theme to the plan the chilling accompaniment of a nightmare is later revealed to be a haunting children’s nursery song, and then mutates into an ethereal melody in the film’s final scenes. The characters, despite their flaws, are all surprisingly sympathetic. And the film is tightly constructed, without a single unnecessary scene or moment. It ends with a bang, not a whimper, its final words resonating with significance and yet leaving one wanting more, like a swift exit after a mountainous punch line.

At the deepest core of this film lies a mystery wrapped in an enigma: who is the once-orphaned “motorcycle demon from hell,” and what is his relation to Herbert I. McDonnough? The acknowledge to this puzzle relates intimately to the “nature vs. nurture” theme. While I reflect I know the respond, I’ll leave it for you to figure out, based on the clues (“display the tattoo!”) liberally scattered throughout the film. “Okay then!”

I’ve seen Raising Arizona far more times than I can count. It is, in my humble notion, next to Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove the most current, inventive comedy ever made.

The dialogue is absolutely razor-sharp — plenty of examples are certainly readily available in the reviews preceding this one — and the camera work is extraordinary, as well. I’d irascible Raising Arizona a VERY terminate second to Miller’s Crossing in a list of the Coen’s best films. It is admittedly not as visually stylish as Miller’s Crossing (then again, very few films ever made are), and the storyline is not as cohesive as Miller’s Crossing, Fargo, or Barton Fink. However, the film is so stout of verbal gems that it definitely ranks as the Coen’s best dialogue writing anguish. Cage and Hunter are astounding, and John Goodman and William Forsythe are absolutely perfect as the Snopes brothers.

Admittedly, the DVD is nothing very special. All you really gain is the more durable medium and a widescreen format. Some kind of “The Making of…” mini-documentary, or better yet, a commentary option with two or three of the actors, the director of photography, or ideally the Coens themselves would have been a priceless addition to the DVD.

Many, many thanks are extended to Nelvana and Lop Jr. for bringing abet the Backyardigans for another season. This DVD has four episodes from the second season (which will reportedly have twenty episodes) and although the musical genres are rather obscure (at least I’ve never heard of some of them), the quality of entertainment exceeds the first season.

“Mission to Mars” starts it off with Kenyan High Life music, one of the genres I’ve never heard of before, but which sounds like a depraved between calypso and Latin music. Uniqua, Pablo and Austin are astronauts who head off to Mars to investigate a mysterious audio signal. Tyrone and Tasha remain unhurried to man mission control.

“Samurai Pie” is my absolute popular episode of the whole series so far. Far East meets Western in this fabulous combination of spaghetti western music (a genre I HAVE heard of before), and kung fu / ninja action movies. The settings are very similar to those in the movie “Entertaining Away”, mixed with some “Karate Kid”, “Kung Fu” and “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”. Tyrone makes the world’s greatest samurai pies, and is teaching his apprentice Austin the tricks of the trade. Their task is to perform the Tremendous Pie for Empress Tasha, and secure it to her royal table before the pie-stealing ninjas Uniqua and Pablo acquire off with it.

“Insecure of You” has Tasha as a inflamed scientist, with Austin as her henchman. Even though it’s his birthday, she sends him out on a mission to declare secret letters to three monsters, Tyrone the mummy, Uniqua the werewolf and Pablo the vampire. The letters are actually invitations to a surprise birthday “Monster Party” with lots of singing and dancing to a `50s petite band theme.

“Whodunit? ” is an Agatha Christie-type mystery adventure, area in Mystery Manor, on the Misty Moors of Scotland, with detective Pablo trying to gain Lady Tasha’s stolen jewels. Is the thief neighbor Mr. Austin Frothingslosh, unexpected visitor Uniqua Underhood, or did Butler Tyrone do it?

Cute, but never annoying; imaginative, but detached simple enough for young children to enjoy; informative without being preachy, lots of singing and dancing to current musical genres, plus now (ta-dah!!!!!) with Alicia Keyes on board as a singing mommy Martian – what more could you possibly ask for in children’s entertainment?

3…2…1…Occupy OFF! Originate into adventure with The Backyardigans as they peer outer station, master the art of making pie like samurai (pie-YA!), go on a mystery caper to win missing jewels, and visit a excited scientist’s laboratory!

Mission to Mars features 4 different episodes, and is BY FAR the most consuming and fun Backyardigans DVD! My son watches his other Backyardigan DVD’s intermittently, but he unprejudiced got this one a few days ago and watches it over and over and over…

Here are the four episodes:

MISSION TO MARS: When the Backyardigans receive a weird signal originating from Mars, Uniqua, Pablo and Austin blast off to investigate. They’re backed up by Tyrone and Tasha, who remain on Earth to benefit at Mission Control. The Backyardigans leave prepared for anything, but encounter some surprises along the diagram. They don’t give up, however, and eventually compose a surprising discovery regarding the source of the signal.

This episode features two recent characters: Mommy Martian (played by Alicia Keys) and Puny Martian/Boinga (played by Shakyra Lipscomb) .

SAMURAI PIE: Spaghetti Western music plays as Samurai Pie Maker Tyrone trains apprentice Austin to invent the Tremendous Pie for Empress Tasha…while fending off pie-stealing Ninjas Uniqua and Pablo!

SCARED OF YOU: Angry Scientist Tasha sends Austin to bring three monsters (Tyrone, Uniqua and Pablo) encourage to her laboratory. Tasha’s Einsteinian hairdo is *hilarious*. Be on the lookout for special appearances by Mummy, Werewolf, and Vampire!

WHODUNIT? : Detective Pablo (looking grand like Sherlock Holmes!) is on the case at Mystery Manor to glance who stole Tasha’s jewels. Tyrone, Austin and Uniqua are all suspects! Featuring a mysterious English mansion, hedge maze, and theatrical “acting”, this episode is my well-liked!

Because the last two episodes are mystery-oriented, the Mission to Mars DVD would effect an *excellent* Halloween experience for the puny ones! As always, there are clever lyrics and diverse musical styles with the songs, so the episodes are not only arresting, but musically educational.

This DVD also has some special features:

*”Fill Tight” dance along with Pablo

*”A Message, A Message” dance along with Uniqua

*The Backyardigans Game Trial on DVD-ROM (only a 1/2 hour’s worth of gameplay)

An excellent–and very affordable–addition to the Backyardigans collection!
