There’s no doubt about it, Disney’s wonderfully charming classic “Oliver and Company” is one of the most dated gripping films you’ll ever peek. Of course, that’s a sizable portion of its charm. What could be more “`80s” than 1980s Original York City? How about the music of Billy Joel and Huey Lewis? I know they were two favorites of mine in the `80s! Okay, to be unprejudiced, Billy Joel and Huey Lewis aside, the `80s is something you peep befriend on and mock rather than understanding fondly, especially the clothes, and Oliver and Company captures that aspect, along with many others, perfectly. So, it’s dated. Everything is, really. Call it nostalgia. Anywho, as strongly `80s as “Oliver and Company” is, it rises above it! It is simply a mountainous film! That’s something that’s easy to forget if you haven’t seen it in a while. “Oliver and Company” is Disney’s twist on Charles Dickens’ “Oliver Twist,” and it is an Righteous modernization! All the best characters are there, and the cast is star-studded! The piano man himself, Billy Joel, voices the artful Dodger, a canine so frigid he puts Snoopy to shame (we detached care for ya, Snoopy)! The hilarious Cheech Marin is Tito the Chihuahua, animation alumnus Dom Deluise is Fagin, the divine Bette Midler is one of Disney’s funniest characters as Georgette, Robert Loggia is the excellently slimy villain, Sykes, and a very young Joey Lawrence plays Oliver, honest to name a few! With seamlessly incorporated computer animation and painstakingly acquired “dog’s peep belief” shots of Modern York City, “Oliver and Company” was the film that kicked off Disney’s mountainous comeback as an animation heavyweight, though this cute itsy-bitsy film was easily forgotten in the wake of Disney’s mega-hit, “The Puny Mermaid,” the following year. But don’t let that terminate you from enjoying the magic of “Oliver and Company” yourself! Even the soundtrack is terrific, despite that it is powerfully “80s.” And, it’s improbable how well Disney has translated “Oliver Twist” into a story about cats and dogs on the streets of Original York without losing the heart of the sage and its underlying messages. The DVD is incredible as well, especially for a single-disc Disney release! This is the plan DVDs should be! In addition to the widescreen presentation of the film, you gain a gradual the scenes featurette from the current theatrical release, 2 shorter featurettes, a TV place, theatrical trailers, a scrapbook gallery of art and other materials, 2 sing-along-songs, and the best part: You glean two classic Disney shorts! Included as extras are “Puss Cafe,” a hilarious Pluto cartoon where the pup goes up against two troublesome felines invading his backyard, and “Lend a Paw,” the Oscar winning Mickey Mouse short in which Pluto saves a kitten from drowning and posthaste regrets it. Outstanding stuff, and an extraordinary selection of extras for a single-disc Disney DVD! Rediscover this Disney Classic on DVD today! You won’t regret it!

During the 80′s, the studio hit an artistic, creative, and commercial poke. However, I quiet win that I quite savor Disney’s 80′s films, many of which experimented with computer animation, non-musical storylines, and different source materials. One of my common pre-Little Mermaid 80′s Disney films is Oliver and Company. Boasting a soundtrack filled with colossal songs and a fantastic cast of characters, Oliver and Company finally gets the DVD treatment, albeit a less-than-stellar one.

For one, the transfer is beneficial, but it could be remarkable better and it has a lovely amount of grain.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Oliver and Company! Click Here

The bonus features could have been worthy better as well. A few fluff EPK-type featurettes, which are nice, but tranquil fluffy, are sadly enough the meat of the bonuses. Also included, fortunately, are the modern trailer, unusual TV place, and the 1995 re-release trailer. Two sing-alongs are included as well as two classic Disney short cartoons.

Overall, it’s nice to inspect Oliver and Company on DVD at last. This is probably the best DVD edition Disney will give it for at least a while, so if you’re considering picking it up, go for it.

Brain Kest’s videos capable, effective, remarkable. Kest has a right exertion for his students including those who peek his videos. Those who snipe about him posing or being shirtless are simply missing the point. Its ok to have a shapely, healthy body!

Kest teaching style is motivational, yet compassionate. He urges the user to modify the exercises to the user’s body type rather than a genuine replication of the asana urged by “old-fashioned school” yoga teachers. Kest understands that most students (especially westerners) cant readily adapt their tight, rigid bodies to an Iyengar level of perfection. For them to do so would place them out of harmony with their body and possibly cause injury and needless duress.I bring this up as one reviewer ( a yoga techer) complained that some of the students in the video were not in perfect build.

Anyway, his video vol 1, is best for those who have some exhaust leisurely them, particularly some yoga. These tapes are based on Ashtanga yoga, the most physically difficult system of yoga. An out of shape beginner will win this tape very enchanting.

I’ve been an on and off exerciser for years, never able to pause motivated enough to stick with a program for more than a few months. I started using the Living Arts yoga tapes at first, which are also terrific, but heard that Kest taught a really bright and envigorating class, and he does! You accept a total body conditioning workout that tones and stretches the muscles while calming your mind. I’m sorry to peep a few people posting reviews saying the tape is too egotistical, I found that not to be the case. One reviewer even posted a review though he or she said they never even did the workout. Search For it once to peek the series, then do it and you’ll feel the benefits that have everyone else raving. Every video has discontinuance up shots and flattering lighting, that’s called marketing, but the substance greatly exceeds the style here. Also, the package says it is BASED on Asthanga, so interrogate some differences from outmoded Asthanga classes. But here it is, several months after beginning these tapes and I detached seek forward to my practice. The progress I study and feel are the best motivators I’ve ever seen.

Tom and Jerry…and Chuck

Chuck Jones: Memories of a Childhood

Tom and Jerry: The Chuck Jones Collection

(Released June 23, 2009 by Warner Home Video)

Another Long DVD Review by Joe Torcivia

It must have been one heck of a surprise for the theatrical audiences of slow 1963 to view the familiar MGM Roaring Lion signal the beginning of the upcoming cartoon – and have the head of TOM travel into its site and go “MEOW! MEOW! FST! FST!”. …I know it was for me when I first saw it on television!

But, with this revamped opening, celebrated animation director Chuck Jones began putting his notice on Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera’s cat and mouse team of TOM AND JERRY.

Chuck’s novel vision and originate sense would guide Bill and Joe’s creations for itsy-bitsy more than three years and 34 cartoons, and it is those cartoons that earn up Warner Home Video’s release Tom and Jerry: The Chuck Jones Collection.

We’ll wreck the review into CONS and PROS.

The CONS:

Content Notes: Once again a WHV site has NO Dispute LISTING anywhere inside the package! One disc is on a “hinged holder” and the other disc rests on the inside abet wall of the packaging! But, beyond that, there is no list of titles for the cartoons and, while they follow the order of new theatrical release, this isn’t something that even most hardcore animation fans have committed to memory, mighty less mere civilians. Ditto on listings for the extra features.

This is at least the THIRD Warner Animation station I’ve purchased this year with no recount notes! The others being Max Fleischer’s Superman and Saturday Morning Cartoons 1960s Volume 1. Doubtless, there are others indicating an melancholy trend in Warner’s DVD packaging for animation sets.

Talent: It’s not Bill Hanna, Joe Barbera, and current composer Scott Bradley. Let everything that follows in this review lie within the context that these three talented individuals are who build Tom and Jerry on the pop culture intention to pause!

The Area Itself: A minor “con”, but the fact that it IS “The Chuck Jones Collection”, coming on the heels of three volumes of the unusual Hanna-Barbera shorts, means that there will probably be no DVD release of the 13 Gene Deitch T&J shorts of 1960-1962.

I was actually hoping for a “Tom and Jerry in the Sixties” location that would encompass the runs of both Deitch AND Jones… but, clearly, Jones is the more marketable name and he gets the call – and we may never be treated to the “otherworldly wonders” of Mr. Deitch.

The PROS:

Talent: It’s Chuck Jones – and, by this time in the 1960s, there were few, if any, talents to truly rival Jones – and he’s brought a few feeble friends with him…

Writer Michael Maltese, co-director and designer Maurice Obedient, squawk actors Mel Blanc and June Foray (…with Blanc doing the “yelling in damage” as Tom. I guess they couldn’t employ Bill Hanna’s classic “AAAAAAHHH!” anymore!), and composer Eugene Poddany.

Put them all together and they made 34 attractive cartoons that looked better than the any of the competing product of the day.

Style: During this period, Tom and Jerry were “Jones-ified”. There’s probably no better procedure to effect it. Jerry became “cuter” than ever before, and Tom took on the “villainous” physical characteristics of Jones’ Daffy Duck and especially Wyle E. Coyote. The animation was lush for the time, and Jones’ trademark character posing abounds.

The Extra Features: “Tom and Jerry and Chuck” is a 20 puny feature on the coming together of this unlikely trio, and is narrated by June Foray. Many parallels are drawn to Jones’ prior Warner Bros. work – in both characters and plots of specific cartoons. It is also shown where Jones save his gain race on T&J plots previously produced by Hanna and Barbera. The feature is punctuated by frequent clips of Chuck Jones, in his later years, speaking on the subject.

In its 25 minutes, “Chuck Jones: Memories of a Childhood” covers what is found in the first three chapters of Mr. Jones’ 1989 book, “Chuck Amuck”, in his acquire words and pictures. This 2008 documentary featurette was produced for Turner Classic Movies and, while very informative, does not mention Tom and Jerry at any time. Give it points if you’re a Jones fan. Occupy away points if you’re a Tom and Jerry fan. You resolve!

Print Quality: To my eyes, and on my equipment, the prints are nearly flawless for average age 45-year-old cartoons. Far better than the print quality on the aforementioned Max Fleischer’s Superman and Saturday Morning Cartoons 1960s Volume 1.

Menus: For reasons unknown, Warner’s DVD animation dwelling main menus often have unusually LOUD background music or “series themes” that play while the menu is displayed. So loud that I’ll either Quiet while lingering on the menu – or navigate off the menu as fleet as possible. Tom and Jerry: The Chuck Jones Collection is an exception to this, as an “appropriately sixties” fragment of cartoon theme-style music (the opening credits theme for “Jerry, Jerry, Quite Contrary” by Dean Elliot) plays at an equally appropriate sound level. THIS SHOULDN’T EVEN NEED TO BE LISTED AS A “PRO”, but the loudness insist is so prevalent on Warner animation situation main menus that such a welcome change should be eminent.

The Cartoons: (Categorized as GRADE “A”, GRADE “F” and everything else falls somewhere in between!)

GRADE “A”:

“Pent-House Mouse”

“The Cat Above, The Mouse Below (Tied for Best!)

“Snowbody Loves Me

“Dreadful Day at Cat Rock

“Of Feline Bondage”

“Duel Personality” (Tied for Best!)

“Jerry, Jerry, Quite Contrary”

“Filet Meow”

“Cat And Dupli-Cat”

“The Mouse From H.U.N.G.E.R.”

“Surf-Bored Cat”

All other shorts topple somewhere below “A” and above “F”, including…

A SPECIAL ODD-HONORABLE MENTION: “O-Solar-Meow”, “Guided Mouse-ille” and “Arrive And Be Mechanized”. Chuck Jones was the master of the “Duck Season / Rabbit Season Trilogy”. These cartoons design up his “Robot Cat / Robot Mouse Trilogy”! Not mammoth, but not unpleasant either.

GRADE “F”:

“Matinee Mouse” and “Shutter Bugged Cat” For their jarring exhaust of veteran Hanna-Barbera stock footage – and for using it without Scott Bradley’s music! A double demerit!

The cartoons more than average out to a “PRO”! And so does the DVD place as a whole.

In the final analysis TOM AND JERRY, under the stewardship of Charles M. (“Chuck”) Jones, was expansive and unusually innovative at its beginning – but, unfortunately, began to peter-out as Jones stepped further and further away from it.

The best entries were where Jones, Michael Maltese, Maurice Wonderful and Eugene Poddany came together as a shapely creative force, experimenting all the map – and the lesser entries occurred when they did not. Though writer Bob Inspect contributed some gracious exceptions to this rule throughout the speed.

As a DVD collection, the cartoons in this space are well worth multiple viewings and will provide many hours of enjoyment. (I watched “Surf-Bored Cat” four times in one day!)

Even the lesser efforts were among the best (…if not ACTUALLY the best) theatrical absorbing shorts of their time. Keeping it in THAT perspective, I recommend this location to anyone with an interest in Chuck Jones, Tom and Jerry, and the appealing shorts of the sixties. If you bask in some valid former (stylized) fun in your cartoons, this is for you!

I loved every episode of this tape. From the battle against Senkaku, the confrontation of Sojirou Seta (by the contrivance, Sojirou was never allotment of the Shinsengumi, that reviewer was probebly thinking of Okita Soshi, who looks a lot like Sojirou), Sanosuke’s special training, and meeting one of of the Juppongatana, Chou the sword hunter. This volume kept me enthusiastic through till the very destroy. If you’ve been following the series so far, this volume will not dissapoint.

This is the third DVD of the second of third saga. It starts out with Saito and Kenshin entering Shishio’s mansion and then Kenshin fights Senkaku, of course defeating him, then Sojiro, which in the process, Kenshin’s reverse-blade sword is reduce in half, which leaves Kenshin no choice but to hunt down the creator of it so he can continue his fight with Shishio and the Jupogottona. I don’t want to spoil anything else, but this is one must-get DVD. Bask In!!!!!

I can’t remember the film, but I’d seen an veteran movie once about a screenwriter who was complaining about the device the studio treated his shrimp script about kids playing ball in the park. Once it was written and sold, the fraction was later turned into a war film, ruing any care, attention or exact labor that the writer had attach into an otherwise fetching tale. To say that this is what could have happened to the Amazing Four is unbiased an assumption. But, somewhere along the line, between writing the script and casting the film, somebody who didn’t know a damn thing about Marvel’s finest hero group took control and warped it into one of the stupidest pieces of cinema this side of SuperGirl. Either they didn’t know or they didn’t care. Rob your catch.

When I heard who was cast as Ben Grimm, the Thing, I was really exasperated. I had never even once concept of Michael Chiklis, but there could not have been anyone better for the role. Hyped up, I learned about who would catch the role of the Human Torch. Whatever, I’d never even heard of this kid. Then, Jessica Alba, and I said, “Oh no.” Not as the….Invisible Woman??? How can it be worse!?! Then, it got worse with some guy who’s name I couldn’t even advise as Mr. Amazing, with gray dye on his temples. Not even looking anywhere come the sincere age of Reed Richards, this guy meant doom. But not all by himself. No, the true doom would advance from the smug actor, Something Whatisname, who would demolish the character of Dr. Doom forever. Not only did this guy leer like he couldn’t play Doom but he played him in a really boring location blueprint. Here…

Reed and his ilk want to go out into spot for a science mission. I halfway believed him as a colorful guy, but never are we made to possess that he is a genius. Victor Von Doom is the billionaire who finances the project and tags along – with Sue Storm as his girlfriend (!) and Johnny and Ben to note along as pilots. Now, what is execrable with this legend?

Buy,Download, Or Stream Fantastic Four! Click Here

FIRST: Reed and Doom were friends in college until Doom blew up his hold face in a science mistake and blamed it on Reed, hating him forever. This was waaaaay before Reed even knew the Storms.

SECOND: Johnny Storm was great younger in the comical book, at least by three or four years. AT LEAST. How he unbelievably managed to lift the plug into set at that age, I will never know, so it’s expedient that they fixed that piece.

THIRD: I don’t contemplate Sue was a scientist in the book – in fact, I’m clear of it. Either method, Jessica Alba, being a major hottie, gets away with her hotness when being in ANY movie. But she will never win away with playing a scientist.

FOURTH: Doom never went into spot with Reed and his ilk and he certain as heck wasn’t dating Sue.

FIFTH: Ben Grimm ROCKS! Can’t diss that share.

So, there. Before the film even starts, not only do they manage to smartly invent a timely record about their origin which manages to incorporate Doom, but they DO IT BADLY AND STUPIDLY! Trying to crunch in the necessary themes was a suitable opinion but it was left in the hands of unpleasant, poor, abominable storytellers. Doom ends up getting zapped in spot with the rest of them and that’s why he has armor? BECAUSE IT’S HIS SKIN? LAME!!!!

I won’t go into remarkable more of my personal hatreds, but I will enlighten you that I abominate the director, Tim Fable of “Barbershop” fame. Not only is he not competent enough to rob on a yarn like this one, but he doesn’t know enough about it to care. With a name like his, I half expected at least a grand visual “epic.” Instead, we seemed to derive fair a pile of smoking junk, as if he didn’t know a pleasurable memoir if it bit him in the butt. Now, some directors fair do what they do because it’s payday or because they don’t have the clout to flex any muscles. If he were Spielberg, he would probably have said, “NO! Consume THIS GARBAGE Abet AND LET WHEN KNOW WHEN YOU HIRE SOME True SCREENWRITERS!” (this from the guy who made “Jurassic Park” – which only floated thanks to CGI. But CLOUT reigns supreme) But, Anecdote is not Spielberg, he’s the guy from “Barbershop.” But the film honest reeks of not even trying. If he was powerless and had to succumb to the studio’s demands, I engage it all befriend. The studio should have backed off, not him.

Ben’s latext skin was generous, but it really should have been better with a dinky CGI touch-ups. There were times when I cringed at how obviously groundless his orange suit was. Unruffled, Chiklis handled the job really well, but the scene where Ben’s wife leaves him was totally comical. Tranquil, not his fault. Furthermore, not that I’m hating, but I could have sworn that Ben’s blind girlfriend in the droll book was white.

Sue Storm and Reed Richards sucked almost as poor as Doctor Doom. Doom is a super-intimidating figure and it did not play out here well enough. He said some mean things, smacked some people around, but he was by no means the insane mastermind from paper pictures. Sue’s powers looked super-cool but Reed’s seemed a bit humorous at times. But during the Sizable FIGHT SCENE, I forgave a lot and impartial enjoyed myself. For a few minutes there, it was totally Wonderful FOUR material.

The Human Torch could not have been better. Not how I imagined him, but he surpassed all my expectations and actually proved me cross in some places. He is cocky and arrogant and, like Lunge from THE INCREDIBLES, seemed to be the only one to be pleased the concept of having tidy powers. Nice change of trot, differing from Batman, Blade and Spiderman, who do what they have to do like it’s a curse or a reason to be bummed out all the time.

If I were to rate it from one to ten, I would give it a four. One because it’s a superhero movie. Two, because Alba is hot. Three, because I loved Grimm and Johnny and their constant bickering. And four, because some of the effects, like the Human Torch’s fire, were top notch. Hold one thing in mind though, after the “Incredibles” came out and everyone saw how icy a person with stretch powers could be, rumor has it that the Unbelievable FOUR went abet and shot “better” scenes of Reed stretching around. Peaceful….no competition. Not even enough competition for a cartoon.

I’ll be unprejudiced…this movie doesn’t need an “extended cleave” version…positive it’s a stunning movie, but most of you already have an acceptable version of it, and an extra 20 minutes of footage is sparkling, but to most of us, not quite enough to clarify buying an entire other DVD version of it…

So WHY am I reviewing this version of the DVD as a 5-star “MUST Recall” version? SOLELY because the “extras” DVD has a feature reflecting and honoring JACK “KING” KIRBY, the man/legend who co-created the entire Marvel universe (among other superheroes), with Stan Lee, but got almost NONE of the credit (or money) that Stan did…

KIRBY was a creative FORCE for both Marvel and DC comics over his lifetime career, and not only was he the world’s greatest humorous book creator and artist, but an amazingly warm, astounding person, family man, and treated his fans as if they were conclude friends…never in the world was a man more deserving of a documentary than Kirby was, and while it should’ve been included in the fresh release, this feature alone is WELL worth watching and well worth as well the cost of buying this DVD…you will NOT be disappointed by watching the KIRBY documentary…he WELL deserves this honor, and it’s VERY appealing for droll fans and non droll fans alike…

In some ways, the group known as the Weather Underground (originally the Weathermen, an offshoot of Students for a Democratic Society) were more a symbol of 1960s radical idealism than a genuine revolutionary movement. Although they planted many bombs during a decade-long period, they never did anything that seriously threatened the government or power structure. Their goal, of course, was to spark a mass movement and inspire others to follow their example, but they remained essentially marginalized. The film, The Weather Underground does a agreeable job at letting members of this group interpret their motives and, in some cases, misgivings about their foray into revolution. Directors Bill Siegel and Sam Green seem to be sympathetic with the movement, and most of the material is told from the point of thought of members. Leaders of the group Bernardine Dohrn and Bill Ayers have retained their radical views and are anything but apologetic about their past actions.

Most members of the group, despite the bombings, were committed to not harming people. This brings up a rather blatant omission in the film -Kathy Boudin, perhaps the group’s most noted member (for her participation in a robbery where a man was killed) is not mentioned at all. This was an uncomfortable decision, apparently done to characterize the Weathermen as essentially nonviolent. To leave out such a well known chapter in the group’s history leaves a gaping hole. Aloof, the parts that are included are inspiring and give a study into the idealism and naivete of these leftist radicals.

In retrospect, it is (at least from one perspective) a dinky dismal to witness how limited long term execute the 1960s counterculture had on society. It seems that they were no match for the propaganda machine of the government and mass media. This film, of course, employs propaganda methods of its possess, as when brutal footage from the Vietnam war is shown. Propaganda it may be, but it does encourage to almost trivialize the violence committed by the Weathermen compared with that perpetrated by the government it was opposing. The other side to this argument is that the fact that these radicals are unruffled alive and that a film like this has been allowed to be made is proof that America is not as oppressive as some would have us beget. Yet, this is only accurate to some extent; as the film explains, the FBI made a concerted (and mainly illegal) concern to raze radical movements. There is also evidence that the government murdered members of the Sad Panthers.

How you react to The Weather Underground depends on your political and cultural perspective. Regardless of this, this film is a compelling contemplate of a radical group and gives us a discover into their world.

At the ruin of the 1960′s, the various student youth movements took a spirited turn toward the far left. Frustrated by their failures to discontinuance America’s involvement in the Vietnam War, a growing minority of student activist leaders whole-heartedly embraced Marxist dogma and began agitating for the overthrow of the United States government. There were a few niggling problems to serve to first, such as taking over the leadership of Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), which they accomplished at the 1968 SDS national convention. An arresting thing to remember about extremists regardless of their political leanings is worth mentioning at this point: radicals can’t obtain along with one another. Views and positions hold on the rigidity of absolute, immutable truth, and anyone who opposes those views is the enemy–even if they’re on your side to commence with. Thus SDS almost immediately disintegrated into squabbling factions of increasing irrelevancy. The most considerable group to arise from the ashes of SDS were the Weathermen, an outrageous far left organization devoted to bringing about a Marxist revolution in the United States. The name of the group, as you probably know if you’re reading this, came from a Bob Dylan song.

The Weathermen, later known as the Weather Underground after the members went into hiding, utterly failed to conclude any of their objectives. Their first great action occurred in Chicago when the group launched their acquire version of Kristalnacht, called “The Days of Rage.” The Weathermen and their associates roamed through the streets of Chicago, breaking windows, fighting with cops, and generally making a gigantic nuisance of themselves. Surprisingly, this microscopic action failed to rouse the citizenry from their capitalist coma, a realization that seemed to shock this merry bunch of pranksters. Angered by this failure, the Weathermen decided to lift up bomb making as a hobby. What followed were years of targeted bombings against such diverse targets as corporations, government institutions, universities, and other structures serving the “enemies of the people.” The Weather Underground suffered setbacks, too, like the accidental detonation of a bomb that killed radicals Ted Gold, Diana Oughton, and Terry Robbins in a Original York City townhouse on March 6, 1970. Composed, the revolution must go on, so over the next several years the bombs continued to explode across the country as the Weather Underground continued to release written or tape recorded “communiqués” justifying their violent actions. By the early 1980s most of the members turned themselves into the authorities, exhausted from their years of living in hiding.

Why two paragraphs of boring summary about an irrelevant political group long gone from the American landscape? Because this enthralling documentary, “The Weather Underground,” covers most of this material in small detail through a collection of vintage news reports, documents, film footage, recreations, and interviews. Made a couple of years ago and aired widely on PBS, which is where I saw portion of it and wanted more, the documentary revisits many of the distinguished players more than two decades after the group dissolved. We bag to peek and hear Billy Ayers, Bernadine Dohrn, Trace Rudd, Naomi Jaffe, David Gilbert, Brian Flanagan, and Laura Whitehorn reminisce about their days as revolutionary fighters battling for the soul of America. Moreover, interviews with dilapidated SDS leader Todd Gitlin, musty Dark Panther Kathleen Cleaver, and FBI agent Don Strickland provide a different point of thought on the activities of the Weather Underground. By listening to these people describe their experiences, we learn more about how wrathful radicals became over the destroy of Gloomy Panther leader Fred Hampton, about how the group helped Timothy Leary hurry from prison, and learn to marvel in dread at the massive comb over Designate Rudd sported as a young communist revolutionary.

It’s not too difficult to notice where the filmmakers’ loyalties lie regarding the activities of the Weather Underground. Although careful not to create them spy too frosty, it’s fairly certain the presentation aims to point to these characters as admirable figures. They placed a baseball bat in Billy Ayers’s hands as he strolled down memory lane remembering the “Days of Rage” fiasco. While we could write off this stunt as sensationalism, it’s more problematic to query the questions effect to the various members. Why did Kathy Boudin’s name never approach up in the film? Probably because Boudin, unlike many members we view here, did end people in the name of a revolutionary cause. In the early 1980s, she joined the Gloomy Liberation Army and took portion in an armored car robbery that resulted in the deaths of two police officers and a security guard. The ghost of Boudin is apparently a pickle the filmmakers wished to avoid, although I should credit them for interviewing David Gilbert, a man currently serving a life sentence for his involvement in the same crime. It objective seems most of the questions don’t dig too deeply into the questionable practices of the Weather revolution. Then again, maybe they don’t need to; several of the old-fashioned members appear as though they’re having problems coming to terms with their past behavior. That’s a hopeful heed.

Although I’ve had rough words in the past about these people and their unfriendly actions, I had a tough time disliking them in the film. A few of them, primarily Sign Rudd and Brian Flanagan, seem like people you could sit down with for a few hours and have an consuming conversation about any topic. The commentary track with Ayers and Dohrn is well worth a listen primarily for the realization that even stolid commies have a self-deprecating sense of humor. But you also observe that several of these people aren’t quite ready to repudiate their passe positions. I contemplate it was Laura Whitehorn who said she would do it all over again if given the chance, a belief that is hardly encouraging. Give this one a eye, though. It’s mesmerizing.

In “Death in Holy Orders”, Commander Adam Dalgliesh (Martin Shaw) of Fresh Scotland Yard returns to the runt theological college of Saint Anselm, which he knows from childhood, on the quiz of a man whose son mysteriously died while studying for the priesthood there. Ronald Treeves’ death has advance unprejudiced as the monastery must defend itself from closure by Archdeacon Matthew Crampton (Clive Wood), who feels that its vital artwork would be better placed elsewhere and disdains the the elitist, stale ideology of the exiguous college. It proves difficult to win the details of the slow man’s life from among the dirty itsy-bitsy secrets that the community of Saint Anselm has composed over the years. But there is minute time to lose, as a cloud of death has descended upon the residence. Murders originate to pile up.

Modern British assassinate mysteries seem never to be about serial killers or assassinate for profit. They are astute enough to realize that murderers who don’t know their victims well effect for anorexic, underwritten narratives. So they write sordid mysteries, overloaded with character behavior, where every person fervent is nursing some fright and astounding secret though-provoking sex, drugs, death, adultery, illegitimacy, and/or homosexuality. “Death in Holy Orders” throws religion, madness, and old-fashioned history into the mix. Yet British cancel mysteries are known for their class -even, ironically, for being highbrow. They pull it off by casting valid character actors, allocating a expansive amount of time to character development in the fabricate of dialogue, and giving the suspects at least as noteworthy attention as the detective. Adam Dalgliesh mysteries follow that formula. They owe their success to righteous ensemble casts that play every variety of villain and flawed character, in particular, to perfection. Highbrow? Not at all. This is sordid, outrageous stuff. But done the intention on the British do it, it’s stylish.

Actor Martin Shaw makes his debut as Adam Dalgliesh in “Death in Holy Orders”. Roy Marsden owned the role from 1983-1998, through 10 adaptations of P.D. James’ books. Which actor one prefers is a matter of personal taste, but I always found Marsden’s Dalgliesh to be neurotic and distastefully self-righteous. Martin Shaw’s Dalgliesh is probably those things, but his interpretation is notably soulful. He serene has a kind of suited detachment from those around him -for which one character takes him to task, but I gain him more enthralling. Director Jonny Campbell has given “Death in Holy Orders” a persistently ominous tone, and doesn’t hesitate to exhaust the ecclesiastical environment to heighten the sense of doom. There are no fewer than 15 suspects in the investigation. Add the multiple victims, and this is quite a great cast. The performances are all first-rate, but spare no melodrama. Many of these characters are overwrought, perhaps even moreso than is normal for a British mystery. But “Death in Holy Orders” always entertains. Fans of Brit murders and detectives will surely appreciate it.

The DVD: You have to wait for the Main Menu to appear, which it does after one ad and a short preview. You have the option of watching the film in 2 parts, as it was shown on television. There is a 30-minute featurette entitled “Writers and Places”. It looks as if it was made at least 25 years ago under the title “P.D. James on the Risky Edge”. In this petite documentary, author P.D. James talks about the considerable role that station plays in detective writing. Using several of her maintain novels as examples, she describes how her stories evolve from their settings and how residence is traditional to emphasize the scare of the crime. It’s not a abominable documentary, but it is a shrimp repetitive. It doesn’t catch a half an hour to rep the point. “Cast/Author Biographies” are text bios and include valuable filmographies.

For the reviewer who believes that no one in America has heard of Martin Shaw, guess again. For me, his best role is Chauvelin in the newest recreation of the Scarlet Pimpernel (1995) . As a villian he was complicated, ‘soulful’ but murderous. Too poor the lead character in that production was a disappointment or it might have done better here. “Rhodes” was well acted but a one-time search for and worthy of Shaw’s other work is not available here. So as a fan of both Shaw and Marsden’s Dalgliesh, I was eager to perceive Shaw in this role. He was satisfactory. As another reviewer said he is a impress fresh character, but a bit more tragic (and complicated, as always) . Marsden, I’m obvious, is tired of twenty years in the role and current interpretations of Poirot or Holmes have only led to better and better characters. Shaw lends another layer to what has been a rather wooden character up to now.

That said, you have to be a fan of PD James to like this one. There are too many characters, each of whom has secrets, crimes and mayhem in their past. I have never been in a ‘closed society’ (as James might call it) where there have been so many demented people outside of an asylum. The region is like Shakespeare – you need a copy of the book next to you in order to follow it. And the next day I collect myself saying ‘Wait a runt, why did he do that? What was her motivation for that? ‘ PD James does not bother about all the strings. Noteworthy as she denigrates the obsolete ‘butler in the library’ settings, Agatha Christie is aloof the queen of destroy mysteries. When you secure to the demolish of one of Christie’s stories you say, ‘How did I miss that clue? ‘, not ‘Wait a minute’.

Korean War Stories (Robert Uth, PBS) presents a modern combination of intelligent interview pieces with fabulous film footage, offering the viewer the rare opportunity to explore into the characters that have saved us from more struggle throughout the last 50 years (this is 2005) . One of the most poignant collections of interviews is that which details Brad Smith’s efforts to defend the Army’s residence in the early, heartbreaking months of the War; how our under protected, underequipped soldiers woke up to a wall of Chinese, Russian, and North Koreans bearing heavy tanks down on Americans with nothing but unsophisticated rocket launchers to defend themselves. The producer, Robert Uth, seems to have found the perfect blending of accurate history and testimony, with documentary footage and imagery. The unique music (other than the Willie Nelson performance) is exceptionally provocative and draws the viewer into the experience even more. Korean War Stories is a beautiful production I thoroughly recommend.

The best line in this video is come the extinguish, where a broken-down of that war says, “The Korean War is not a forgotten war, it is a forgotten victory.” Absolutely proper, but a point few people in the United States seem to understand. In the age of nuclear weapons, total victory in the Korean War, as measured by Korean unification under the leadership of the United Nations, was not possible. That was something that General Douglas MacArthur never seemed to understand, which cost him his deny and great of his historical legacy. The pickle is that the people in the United States generally do not understand the principle of slight war for itsy-bitsy gains. In the raze, it turned out to be a grand victory, the policy of containment was the suitable one, as communism self-destructed, overcome by the internal contradictions. Unique commentators are fond of saying that President Ronald Reagan won the icy war, which is not suitable. Harry Truman, a vastly under-appreciated president, made the decision to go to war and conclude the spread of communism. He understood that a stalemate was a victory, as communism will either succeed everywhere or nowhere. The free Europe we know today germinated from a seed planted in Korea.

By far, the best section of this tape is the personal comments from celebrity veterans of the war. Until I viewed it, I did not know that baseball huge Ted Williams was the wingman of astronaut and Senator John Glenn. I also did not know that singer Willie Nelson is also a traditional of the Korean War. Their comments and the footage grasp you succor to a time where the world had changed and the bulk of the free population had not yet caught up.

Finally, one of the most telling moments that will ever exist in historical videos occurs arrive the destroy of the tape. A doctor, returning from Korea, arrives a few minutes before nine in the evening. He is all primed to be welcomed home and talk about his experiences. However, when nine o’clock arrives, he is told that “I Cherish Lucy” is about to advance on, so the attention shifts to the television. Understandably, he is angered and leaves the premises, remaining enraged for two years. However, no account more accurately describes the position of that time. The advent of television has led to a short attention span, and the American public finds it difficult to procure partial results.

This tape is an friendly recapitulation of that era, where there was a seismic shift in political perceptions around the world. The free countries stood their ground and fought against communist aggression, pushing it attend to the point where it started. However, this victory was only certain decades later, and there was an grand cost in blood and worship. Nevertheless, it was no doubt powerful less than it would have been had the communists won in Korea.

Lane Frost, was a bullrider that loved what he did day in and day out and that was RODEO. He had to overcome many different problems throughout his short career. In this movie it isn’t all about one man who rode bulls for a living. 8 Seconds shows how grand rodeo is to all of the Cowboys in rodeo. This movie showed me that Lane Frost was a man that had his ups and his downs throughout his short career as a pro bull rider. It showed me that rodeo is a design of life that is so unpredictable that you never know when your last chase is going to be and it showed me that there is more to rodeo than unprejudiced getting on a horse, bull, or bronc. Rodeo is a scheme of life and it can bring people together and form those halt relationships that you never want to lose and it can also lift away the ones you appreciate. I would have to say this is one of my most popular movie because it showed me that you need to hang on to the things that last and never ever give up no matter what the shameful looks like ahead of you.

When this movie first came out, I did not know who Lane Frost was. After I saw it, however, I wish I would have known him. This film may advance off as sort of sugary sweet to some, but adultery, drinking, fighting and cussing don’t seem so sugary to me. Mr. Frost had faults. He was human. But he prevailed where others have failed. That is what manufacture him a hero and Luke Perry’s portrayal of Mr. Frost exemplifies that.

This movie suffers from a few inaccuracies, but those inaccuracies succor depart this film along at a straggle that non-rodeo people can be pleased. The acting is attractive, and that’s really Luke Perry on some of those bulls. You’ve got to give the guy a nod for that.

The soundtrack is also very influential on the eye and feel of this movie. “Once In Awhile” by Billy Dean is the pinnacle performance in this movie, and if you’re eyes don’t well up when you hear it, you’ve got no heart inside.

This is a decent family movie, although some younger kids probably shouldn’t be exposed to some of the language and the adultery. It should be famous, however, that these things are key in making this a genuine anecdote.

This is a solid movie about a proper man, bulky of heart and fault, yet peaceful a hero to us all.

Otto Preminger’s “Angel Face” has always had a special status in my heart. Preminger, as a filmmaker, is certainly noteworthy–but aside from a few films (including “Laura” and “Anatomy of a Destroy”), he isn’t one of my particular favorites. I don’t know–to me, he was more of a technician than an artist. He made wonderful films, in general, but doesn’t have the appeal of some of the other “great name” directors. I adore “Angel Face,” however, pleasing distinguished for one reason–Jean Simmons. Simmons, I bear, is one of our most underrated actresses. She has played the lead in some very high profile and versatile films, including the scathing “Elmer Gantry,” the yarn “Spartacus,” the terrific musical “Guys and Dolls,” and Olivier’s “Hamlet.” Relegated to mostly TV roles for the last few decades, I wish her film legacy was more widely appreciated. “Angel Face” is particularly considerable in her film oeuvre because it gives her the rare opportunity to play a femme fatale type.

Robert Mitchum, playing an ambulance driver, responds to call piquant a wealthy matriarch. It seems as if Mrs. Tremayne has been mysteriously poisoned by gas. Upon his visit, he meets Mrs. Tremayne’s freeloading husband and her stepdaughter–played with haughty playfulness by Simmons. Infatuated with the young beauty, he soon falls under her spell and actually starts to work for the estate as the chauffeur. Relinquishing a outmoded relationship and financial independence, he becomes more and more alive to in the family dynamic playing out in the mansion. It soon becomes apparent that not all is as it seems and a psychological thriller, of sorts, starts to get.

Essentially, while “Angel Face” is structured as a dilapidated noir–it can also be judged as an effective character perceive. From the haunting music, the murky stretches of mansion, the wistful stares from rain-streaked windows–the mood and atmosphere put a familiar ambiance. But pitting the tough guy persona of Mitchum against the emotional aloofness of Simmons, we witness two obvious and keen personalities. Simmons, with her doll-like features and regal manner, is really what distinguishes this portray. With a more typical noir leading lady, “Angel Face” would not be nearly as effective. Simmons’ playing against type adds to the suspense and mystery–it’s almost as if we are lured (along with Mitchum) deeper into the sage due to our expectations connected to Simmons as an actress.

I highly recommend “Angel Face.” While not Preminger’s best film, it certainly ranks in the top. And while not necessarily the best or most current noir, it certainly is effective and creepy. This is the case of a lot of talented individuals making a very solid and spicy film. KGHarris, 01/07.

Angel Face was directed in 1952 by: Otto Preminger (Laura, 1944; Anatomy Of A Execute, 1959) . Otto Preminger’s `Laura’ is now rightly regarded as one of substantial film noir masterpieces, however he made some less appreciated noirs like Fallen Angel (1945) ; Whirlpool (1949) ; Where The Sidewalk Ends (1950) and this film Angel Face. Upon it’s release critics and public alike had seen perhaps far too many of this type of film hence the negative reviews. However I feel that this film is deserving of some rehabilitation. The theme is a familiar one of the Femme Fatale attempting to obtain some chump to back in a cancel. Angel Face is slightly different in that the Femme Fatale’s (performed by Jean Simmons (Grand Expectations, 1946; Hamlet, 1948; The Dismal Narcissus, 1947) ) motivation is not the standard killing for money but for worship. This makes it similar to the Ellen Berent character played by Gene Tierney in `Leave Her To Heaven’ (1946, John M. Stahl) . Generally in noir’s guys slay for the girl and girls for the money. Robert Mitchum (Out Of The Past, 1947; Crossfire, 1947; Night Of The Hunter, 1955) gives a extraordinary performance of a guy who is not so expressionless as to glean suck into her trap. He also has some immense dialogue that one wish’s they could always have at hand to direct in those situations. Along with Humphrey Bogart and Burt Lancaster, Mitchum has to putrid as one of the broad noir actors. Cinematography was by Harry Stradling (A Streetcar Named Desire, 1951; Johnny Guitar, 1954; A Face In The Crowd, 1957)

This DVD comes with a unbelievable audio commentary by Eddie Muller and is well worth a listen. In 1964 Jean-Luc Godard placed this film at no. 8 in his list of the greatest American films of the sound era. That alone should be righteous enough reason to investigate this film. It also has one of the tall endings.
